Lola is losing the hair off of the top of her head and only 6 months old:( I am hoping that someone might have some insight for me.....I took Lola to the vet, but the vet didn't seem to know exactly what was wrong with her. Last Saturday I noticed a small bald spot on the top of Lola's head. I thought that maybe her barrettes had pulled out some hair..... well she went to the vet on Monday, and they said yes, it was probably hair loss from her barrettes, but it seems to be moving back and getting larger. I am really worried about this, and wondering if anyone has any ideas? Have you seen this before? |
That happened to Libby once. It started as a small bald spot and then seemed to spread. My vet did a skin scraping and also checked her for ringworm. Never did figure out what it was, but it finally cleared up and she grew hair back in those spots. He did give me something to put on it, but I can't remember what it is. Guess I'm not much help, but wish you well and hope Lola's clears up! |
Thank you so much, it's so scary when there is something wrong with the baby. Something tells me that it couldn't be from the barrette because of the pattern it's in. I don't even think a barrette would go back that far. She did have her first grooming last week and I wonder if it could have something to do with that. I am considering trying a miconazole (sp?) cream to see if it helps. My poor baby:( |

Oh no! Poor Lola girl. I hope it is just the barrettes. Whenever a groomer puts one in, make sure to check that it isn't too tight. There was another member here recently who found the skin was pulled too tight. Puppy heads and hair might be more sensitive. Try giving her head a rest from the barrettes and stick to bands or nothing at all. When my boys were younger, I took down their topknots every night and massaged their scalps. The only reason I started leaving them up overnight is that their topknot hair is so long, they end up chewing it or getting it in their eyes. I use tiny scrunchies or latex bands to give their heads a rest. |

dog I bet it was at the groomer. I wonder if the groomer pulled on her fur as she combed it out. Perhaps she got mad and pulled on her topknot. I have a hard time trusting groomers since my poodle was hit with a hairbrush. I have my dogs groomed at my home so I can watch what goes on. You would be shocked how some groomers treat dogs to get them to behave. Be sure you use a hypo allergenic shampoo and conditioner. I would get a trimmer and do it myself before I would hand my precious yorkie over to a stranger. |

I just cut 6" off Mimi's top knot again, she has a fountain now loll. Every night after I brush her teeth, I undo her top knot, brush it & put it up w/mini terry scrunchies. Then I re-do her hair in the am. Princess doesn't have too much hair, so she wears the snag free bands all the time. |
I doubt it's from her topknot, barrette. Could it be mange? |

I need to buy more bands from you before the end of the year. Our pack is getting low. :) |
Oh wow, I'm sorry to hear about Super Mario Lola. Have you guys figured it out yet? |
Your pup is losing hair and the vet said testing is not needed? Mites (particularly an overgrowth of demodex) needs to be ruled out. Demodex are believed to be present in all dogs, but not in quantities large enough to cause hair loss. An excessive amount populating the hair follicles needs to be treated sometimes. It can also mean the pup's immune system is weakened (which is a good reason to hold off on spay/neuter). Ringworm also comes to mind. Skin scraping at a minimum. Culture if that is negative and the problem continues. |
