spaying question Hello!!! I have a five year old girl named Chevelle (Chevy). Everything about her makes me smile and as I'm sure you all know she is like a daughter to me. Well... one bad day when she was almost a year old my mother accidently stepped on her (head). I of course fteaked out and in denial started to wack her chest to try get her to wake up. To my disbelief she did. After a day in am incubator and weeks of taking care of her in every sense... she was back to normal within a few months. However, I was paranoid to the thought of losing her again and did not have her spayed worring about the drugs and her not waking up from surgery. I understamd certain risks are taken by not spaying (I WILL NOT BREED HER) but i felt the benifits of spaying did not out weigh the risks. I am asking for some input on the subject and advice of if I have made the right decision (until benifits out weigh the risks). Basically if previous brain trauma can effect the outcome of the surgery. my vet did tell me it is a higher risk of her not wakimg up |
Welcome to YT!! Glad to have you and your sweet girl Chevy. Did you ever take her into the Vet after that to get looked at? Xray? These skulls on these babies are so fragile, especially at a young age. Since she is 5 years old, I would definitely run some pre op blood work, as well as a standard wellness exam. I would most definitely get her head examined. Maybe even an Xray… or MRI. If the head injury is something that is stressing you out, then you should take all precautions in making sure she is ok. Just because she doesn't have any signs or symptoms doesn't necessary mean everything is ok. Just a thought, my friends Yorkie Delilah. She had a head injury a long time ago. My friend ended up re homing her, she gave her to me so I could find a home. We gave her to my husband’s co worker. Well one night she was running and slipped on the floor. She fell flat on her head and knocked out. He quickly ran to her and tried to wake her up, he was performing CPR, He was able to get her to come to and her eyes kept rolling back. They rushed her to the ER Vet and they ran all these tests on her along with an ultra sound. The Vet found a very old skull/brain injury- he said it was maybe 4 years old- she is 6. He said when she fell she hit that old injury dead on and it made her knock out. All her tests came out normal.. They have stopped her from running on the wood floor, they put rugs around with sticky tape on them so they don’t move. If they weren't home she would have died. So brain/ skull injuries are nothing to mess with. If I were you I would cover all her bases to make sure she can go under anesthesia without any issues. I would not put her under without running tests first. |
Bottom line..this is an issue that only a Vet can give you the correct answers. I know you talked to your vet, but if you want...talk to several. If it were me, I would talk to a neurologist/specialist for the answer. Now, with that said... Welcome to YT! What a horrifying ordeal your baby went thru. I am so happy she was strong and had your love and care to survive. Does she ever go outside? Is she the only dog in the house? Just a couple of questions that I would consider when weighing my options AFTER talking to a neuro vet. Hope you stick around the forum...would love to see pics of Chevy :) |
ask your vet explain your concerns he or she may give you some options get an xray it is important if you cannot afford try to apply for care credit it i a credit card for vets hope you get some answers welcome to Yorkie talk this site is a blessing |
Earlier this year Yogi was diagnosed with encephalitis and we thought we were going to lose him. His brain was swollen, he had spinal tap, brain mri, etc. Thankfully he made a full recovery. Our vet and neurologist concurred and advised neutering him. Blood work was all good. We were scared but We did it last week, at a year and 5 months old. He has made a full recovery and is doing great. I say get advice from medical professionals. Good luck! |
