Advice please puppy sick? Video Hello, Bama my tiny 16 week old puppy has been making a cough/sneeze noise for a week now. I have taken her to the vet 3 times now for this, however she never makes this noise when she is there. She seems to be in perfect health but for this. No temp or anything. Here is the link to the video I took of her making the noise please take a min and let me know what you think. I am worried it is CT or sick from the shots she had done a week ago. Or maybe it's just a RS but I am concerned. Bama cough sneezing - YouTube |
She is only 1.4 lbs tiny but as you can see full of energy. She is eating and drinking fine. Same with pee and poop. The cough/sneeze seems worse at night and in the morning. She runs and plays while it's happening it dos not slow her down one bit. Just scares me. |
Bama is darling. Sounds like a sneeze in the video. Did she have a bordetella vaccine? A lot of Yorkies reverse sneeze, but I don't recall puppies doing it. Reverse sneezing is often brought on by excitement. I am by no means an expert, but I think collapsed trachea would slow her down. She wouldn't be able to keep playing so vigorously. You could ask your vet's office if you can email the video and have the doctor take a look. |
At first I thought maybe kennel cough. When Cali had it she was worse at night and morning. But the video seems more like sneezing than coughing. Did she have the borrdella vaccination recently? I hope they can find out what is causing it. She is adorable and full of spunk! |
Maybe it's allergies. Is anything different when she does it? Did she recently eat, go outside, go in a spot that may be dusty, etc? Does it always happen while she's playing? |
Sounds Like reverse sneezing but you should show your vet the video. |
Thank you, Yes she had her shots two weeks ago it came on after she got them. It's much worse at night and morning. She is full of energy! The noise she makes does not slow her down at all. When I watch videos of CT it's more a honking noise hers is much more like a sneeze cough. She is taking temaril-p right now but it doesn't seem to be helping much. It gets worse when she gets excited but also happeneds when she is sleeping at night. It scares me so much. |
She's so cute! Momo got KC from the intranasal bordatella when he was a puppy, it lasted a long agonizing 3 months. The coughing was worse late @ night & early morning. I had a humidifier on 24-7 & took him & his bed into the bathroom w/me while I showered so he can breathe in the warm steam. You can show your vet the video & they'll listen to her lungs w/the stethoscope. Usually, antibiotics are prescribed to prevent pneumonia. |
The sneeze Hi,Gideon sneezes when I spray hair spray on my hair. Do you use room fresheners or wear perfume. That might trigger it? |
I took Gizmo to the vet for the same type of cough/sneeze, and the vet explained things very well to me. He told me that the shots they get, purposely make them get a cold every week, as that is how they become immune to them. Also the smaller the puppy, the smaller the lungs. If your pup was not used to long energetic play before you received him, his lungs could be weak and need to be built up. Gizmo was super hyper, so every time he would do it, I would put him in his xpen to nap. Well the vet told me I was ruining hs fun and stopping the strengthening of his lungs, and the dr me to stop taking his play away. Sure enough, it took about a week and he no longer did it, as apparently it did strengthen his lungs :-) he has not done it since after about a week of this, and I haven't had any issues with it since. This could be the case with your pup :-) |

A trip back to the vets is in order if you are concerned. Cali developed tracheitis after her last round of vaccinations. Fortunately, a round of antibiotics and a steroid cleared it up. |
With a puppy this tiny, you are going to have to "reboot" your thought processes! When you have a baby this tiny, you can not let something drag on for a week or two...these tiny babies can go downhill within 24 hours and become VERY ill within a couple of days. If your baby received the nasal Bordatella vaccine, that is a live virus and cn easily cause kennel cough, and left untreated for a week or so, can go into pneumonia......I have had too many of my dogs come down sick from getting that vaccine and then required antibiotics ......and it is not uncommon to drag on for several months.....If I am going to get any of my dogs vaccinated against kennel cough, I use the injection, NOT the nasal drops.....but frankly, I do not like that vaccine and do not have it given to any of mine....but mine dont go out in public, they are not boarded, no professionally groomed. Be sure to stay right on top of ANY illness, especially vomiting or diarrhea or fevers....you can find yourself in an emergent situation which could cost you the life of your tiny baby, in very short time.... |
Thank you all very much for your advice. Well three trips to the vet and the vet just wanted to leave her on the me he gave her. The cough wasn't getting any better on the medication so I started to give her an antibiotic within two days it was gone! Thank god! I don't know why they didn't give me an antibiotic for her. I am currently looking for a new vet. She was given injections for her vacs not sprays. I was on top of it as much as I could of been three trips to the vet. However I had to take matters into my own hands and she is all better now. I however do not recommend that just anyone gives there animals medications I have a medical degree and have taken many pharmacology classes so I know the right dose to give. I do feel that the vet should of given her the medication and he did not. I just didn't want my baby to get any sicker. I was up all night with her very worried. She hasn't coughed in a few days now and I am so very happy. |
