infection by eye When Barney woke up this morning his left eye was nearly swollen shut. It is not red or oozy, but the skin under it is pink, swollen, and hard. I took him to the vet this afternoon. He said he has an infection near his eye, but his eye is actually fine. He prescribed 2 meds, Novox and Baytril. As I was leaving, the assistant said not to be shocked if it bursts open and drains. I asked if she meant that it would drain out of his eye. She said no, his skin will actually come open and the infection will drain out of it. Does this sound odd to any of you? Has anyone ever had a yorkie with an infection on their face? Did it pop open? |
No I have no experience of this with dogs, but it does seem normal, like,if you had a sty on your eyelid or a cyst frm an in growing hair or something, at some stage it is gonna pop. |
Poor Barney! I'm glad you got him to the vet right away, and I hope the meds work quickly. Did the vet point out a specific spot around the eye where the infection might be coming from? There is another Yorkie here who had a small wound open up below his eye. It turned out to be a dental related problem. |

Is there no lump or could the vet not tell you where it was at all? If you knew where it was you could make sure to check it. If you sort of know but not exactly you could try a warm compress in that area which should help the infection come to the surface and ease the tension so that if it does ooze it is more gentle. How is he doing, is it seem to really bother him? I hope it sorts itself put soon so you are both relieved. Let us know how he is doing tomorrow. |

Yes, there is a very big lump. It is just below his eye and his skin is pink and looks irritated. Fortunately, he does not seem to be bothered by it. Every now and then, he stops playing and rubs his face on the floor. Otherwise, he's fine. I will try the warm compress. Maybe that will bring some of it out. Thanks for the thoughts. |
I'm with Maximo....it sounds like it could be dental related. You might not necessarily see anything by examining his mouth. |

It could be a simple infection....hard to say. I would keep a very very close eye on it. That looks like a huge bump...which could be a salivary gland...but not sure because I don't know if they are located there. There is one close to the eye, but it causes the eye to bulge. |
The thing that worries me is that it may clear up now, but if it is due to a dental issue, it will come back. |

Here is her thread: http://www.yorkietalk.com/forums/sic...ck-please.html Becky, seeing the picture, I think it must be dental. Not all tooth/oral problems are visible without xray. I agree with Linda's suggestion to see a specialist. It will save both misery and pain for you and Barney in the long run. I would be very concerned about the effect of this on the eye too -- and would want to take care of it as soon as possible. Praying for your little guy. Keep up updated. |
I should say it must be dental/oral related. |

Becky, I am reading the thread I linked above and I am reminded of another case here on YT where the pup had a microscopic foreign object embedded in his skin in his cheek. It caused a wound that would not heal and an infection. |

I'm glad Barney is behaving normally and not bothered. I am also glad you have a good vet. We really like ours too, but there are still things that he would agree require a specialist. I didn't mean to alarm you above -- just wanted you to have as much info as possible. Praying the meds take care of this and that you see improvement quickly. Sending hugs to your little guy. |
Thank you for your thoughts. I hope he is better soon. It actually seems like it has gone down some and is a little softer than it was this afternoon. I will photo it in the morning to see if others think it looks smaller too. Sometimes I just see what I want to see and need second opinions. He rubs it on the carpet every now and then. But I don't know if this is his normal face rubbing stuff or if he is scratching. My brother in law said he thought he noticed him scratching at it last night when he was over. |
yesterday vs today 1 Attachment(s) Here is a pic comparing yesterday to today. The top is yesterday. The bottom is today. In my opinion, it's a little better. I am hoping it continues to go down and that we will avoid it popping open. I was wrong about his meds. He will take them for 10 days, not 5. My husband reminded me that when our son had staff, it got much worse before getting better. His eye is closed because of the flash. Otherwise, it hasn't been affected. |
Barney's cheek does look less puffy. Praying the antibiotics take care of this and that there isn't some underlying problem. |
It does look improved....do hope that continues! |
Just seeing this thread. Poor Barney...it looks so very painful. Praying it continues to heal. Gentle hugs to sweet Barney. |

an update: Barney's eye is almost completely back to normal. I found swollen lymph nodes under his jaw Saturday evening, but they are going down also. He has 6 days of meds left. I will be watching him like a hawk to see if this mystery infection returns. I appreciate everyone's concerns and suggestions. Fortunately, the knot did not burst. Hopefully, this is the end of the Barney saga. |

I'm so glad to hear Barney is getting over whatever this was. I pray it stays gone! There must be something in the air because Jasper has been a stinker himself these last few days. Goodness... |
SO happy to hear that Barney is on the mend!! :) |
I appreciate everybody's advice about his eye. I hope we are really this lucky and that it was just a random infection. Reading this section of YT scares me to death. |

Max went through a lot of stuff with his eyes (all better now), and I regret learning all that I did. Praying Barney won't have anymore trouble. |
