Help! My Yorkie with tongue to the side We have a 10 year old yorkie whose tongue just started doing something strange. When Kirby sticks his tongue out to give us a kiss his tongue deviates to the right. He is eating and drinking. He has slowed down physically as far as climbing stairs and running and jumping. But, we figured this was normal aging behavior. The only other symptom that seems new along with the tongue-thing is that in the last month or so he has started snoring loudly with some snorting sounds. Sometimes, his breathing also seems labored. From this site, I know that Yorkies at times have all sorts of snoring and breathing symptoms that turn out to be normal. We will take him to the vet on Monday. But I was wondering if anyone out there has some ideas on this tongue symptom. Thanks. |
My Daisy is 10. I noticed her tongue hanging out sideways one time and just as I saw it she changed back to normal. I don't know why. I think some older dogs who are missing teeth have tongues like that. Maybe someone else has an answer. Daisy does a little snorting and congested breathing when she first lies down at night but it usually goes away once she gets to sleep. She has allergies and I give her Benadryl in the morning and evening. Let me know what the vet says. I have mentioned the breathing to the vet and they don't seem concerned. Last year her allergy symptoms completely went away at the end of November so I am hoping they do again this year. |
Just a guess: Maybe she has problem tooth on the other side or a sore in her mouth that is hurting her, so when she sticks her tongue out she moves it to the other side to avoid pain? I would let the vet check her out. |
I will definitely have the vet check his teeth. I don't see any missing teeth. Although, he may have a sore tooth. He just ate his dinner and polished it all off. My concern is that there may be something neurological going on with him. Although his gait is normal and he seems to be acting otherwise normal. I guess we are just concerned because some internet searches on veterinary sites regarding the tongue to one side mention the possibility of it being neurological. Especially since it just started in the last few days. |
I hope he's ok. Please let us know what you find out because it will be something to watch for since my pup is 10 yrs old too. |
