Fractured Fibula Hi, Got the news yesterday from Vet that my 6 month old Yorkie, Gem, has a broken Fibula (the smaller non weight bearing bone). The vet said it will heal on it's own. The specialist has asked for another Xray view to check for hairline fractures. Gem is on pain med and doesn't want to walk but will take a few steps to go potty. She seems alert and in a happy spirit with tail wagging. Has anyone dealt with this before? How long did it take to heal? any advise? |
Hope she heals well! |
Yikes...six months old and they don't want to repair it? Have you consulted with a board certified surgeon? I would because he is growing and it might be important to fix this. You can find a surgeon at: www.acvs.org |
Surgery isn't always performed for a broken fibula and sometimes, splints will be deemed sufficient to help the bone heal on its own. Does Gem have one of these instead? |
Just pain meds so far. She will go in for another x ray in an hour. her X rays yesterday were sent to 2 specialists for 2nd opinion. We'll see if new shots produce anything new. |
The nice thing about a board certified surgeon is that you will get an expert opinion. One thing I have found with them is that they are not "surgery happy". They only recommend surgery if absolutely needed. |

Yes, good idea about the Surgeon. Will check on after today's x ray. |
Poor baby Gem. Sending prayers and best wishes. |
Ouch! Poor baby. Wishing Gem a speedy recovery. |
Had this with a pomeranian puppy. He was around 10 weeks old. They did cast him and he did well untill he was about 12-13 years old. Then he developed some arthritis. little worse in that leg. He lived to be 15. Good luck, sorry about your baby. |
One of my dogs broke a bone as a pup and it was splinted. I came to later realize how lucky I was that it actually healed. I didn't know about specialists back then because if I did I would have gotten an opinion on it. I hope your pup is ok! |
2nd X ray found hairline fracture in Tibula Very small hairline fracture in Tibula was found. Darn! Vet recommended that pins or screws not be used because they could harm the growth plate and stunt growth in that leg. She is only 6 months old. We will get another Xray in 1 week to see how it is healing. If issues, then we might need to reevaluate. I've always really liked my vet in the past and she has taken good care of my dogs so I'm going to trust her on this. Gemma is doing remarkably well. Getting by on 3 legs and being her happy, although not bouncy, self. |
I'm new and just read this post. Wondering how Gem is doing now? Hope all is good! |
