Coccidia Yesterday I took Cali for a well check and next set of vaccines. Her parasite check (which was negative 3 weeks ago) came back positive for coccidia! Thankfully, she's asymptomatic. We started her on Albon (which she loves). But now I'm freaked out. Since she was negative 3 weeks ago, was she just not shedding at that time or is this something she picked up at our house? Rhett and Scarlett are getting hauled in this afternoon to get them rechecked, even though they had negative screens 2 months ago. Ugh. |
Oh no! Poor Cali. I hope your other two test negative. Did Cali recently have parasites and is that why you were doing the follow up test? I need to bring a stool sample in for my boys. I always forget when they have their checkups, so I have been letting it slide. |
Oh no.. poor baby! Hopefully she gets better soon. At least Cali likes the medicine so it will be easy for you. |
Most dogs are infected with coccidia...statistics say 70 - 80% of all kennels or people that raise puppies/dogs, coccidia is present. Coccidia is soo easily spread, from yard to yard, dog park to your yard, public walking areas where other dogs have walked to your yard....plus it is carried by birds, rabbits, mice, etc......Some dogs/puppies never have the symptoms of coccidia.....stress will cause the dog to "break" with symptoms (diarrhea, possibly vomiting).....this is very common in young puppies during the transition during weaning and also when they go to their new homes, they will break with it within a week or so, strictly from the stress they are going through. This is why I beg my new owners NOT to go changing up food as soon as they get the baby home. Most of my owners have left their babies on RC....they definately leave the food alone until they are a year old...then if they want to change their food they can safely do so without putting extra stress on the puppy. |
Well Rhett and Scarlett tested negative. I haven't switched the food her foster mom had her on, but she does sometimes steal R&S's Blue Buffalo from their bowl when they aren't looking. She also hasn't been anywhere except the vet's office in the past couple of weeks. I have no clue what may have stressed her enough to start shedding the virus, but hopefully we caught it early enough that she won't have any symptoms. Unfortunately, she did have her vaccine before we got the result of the test. I hope that won't be too much on her. She seems more tired than usual today. But between naps, she's running and playing like she normally does. Oh, and she gained half a pound in the 3 weeks we've had her. My DH is good at getting animals to grow :D |
