Vision Loss in My Yorkie Myself like others have mentioned, know this is harder on me than my Yorkie. Scrappy is 13 years old and it may have been gradual with his loss but the last phase seem to come very fast. I'm careful about not moving or leaving things on the floor he isn't aware of. I also talk to him so he will know where I am. Recently, he visited two homes that he was familiar with but does not know like his own home. He was bumping into things which just breaks my heart. Any suggestions are welcomed. |

What is the eiagnosis? PRA isn't fixable, but cataracts can be?:) They can do well though. Just don't move furniture, etc. |
Nikki went completely blind and deaf gradually. He adapted pretty well with getting around. He would stay on my bed, go down the ramp to pee and go down the all to the kitchen when he felt like it. I started feeding him on my bed so he wouldn't have to get up as much as he got older. Towards the end he was bumping into things and it was sad to see. He startled easily so I would always gently touch him when I needed to pick him up. It is very difficult to see them age. |
I have a 14 year old poodle that lost her vision (and her eyes) to glaucoma. She's completely blind now. Give your baby a little time. The gentle bumping into things is the way they map their surroundings and learn to get around. It took my girl a few months before she was completely comfortable on stairs and places in the house that she wasn't all that familiar with. She has her comfort zones, which are mainly my bedroom, kitchen, hallway and bathroom. She occasionally ventures out to other rooms but still does the gentle bumping thing to orient herself to where she's at in those rooms. Placing different textured throw rugs in certain transition areas is helpful and will assist her in orienting herself from place to place. Good luck. My Paris went blind also. On my blog are ideas I did to help him. THe link is at the bottom of the post. I hope you can find some ideas that will help you. Paris had PRA he did fine with his blindness. You can do fine too. |
I also put a baby guard rail on the side of my bed so Nikki could only get off the bed using the ramp by wear he slept. I was afraid he would walk off my bed. Using this protected him from that. |
We have a 21/2 year old shih Tzu who was diagnosed with junior cataracts. After meeting with several vets we decided to have surgery done. They did the left eye but he's got a cataract in the other eye also that needs surgery. While we were waiting for the doctor we spoke to another couple who had a 15 year old yorkie who was going blind but the reason was cataracts. They elected to have the surgery for the dog. When the dog came out from the exam room he ran right over to the owners. This was the first time in a long time the dog was able to see, at least from one eye. They are planning to have a second surgery as soon as possible. It all depends on the reason for the blindness. It's a very expensive operation. It cost us $3400 for one eye and he still has one to go. I wouldn't let any dog stay blind if there was a way to take care of it no matter how old they are. |
