Nena has a swollen/irritated eye :( 1 Attachment(s) I feel so bad because I just noticed it :'( Don't know precisely when it got all red. I did notice Nena "scratching" her face but didn't think anything of it. I feel so bad and angry with myself. Around her eye it's red and swollen, the hair was all sticky and covering her eye a bit (maybe that's why I didn't see it). I tried cutting most of the hair around her eye and cleaned it with water. My vet is closed tomorrow but they have the number of an office that works in the weekends and at night. I'll call them first thing in the morning. I'll attach a picture. Is there something I can do in the mean time? |
1 Attachment(s) Ooow, I attached socks to her legs so she can't bother her eye while we sleep. |
Poor baby! Look at her eye under a bright light, looking a little from the side. Gently look under her lids too to check for hair or anything else in the eye. Max has had corneal ulcers, which I can identify now. It is a hole in the outer layer of the eye. Scratches are more difficult to detect without a stain test. I wouldn't use any over the counter like eye drops, which can make things worse. Nena could also have a general irritation that I think it called uveitis. Or something like pink eye. It has to be treated as soon as possible so that it doesn't turn into something more serious. If you don't have a pet emergency room, make sure she is seen as early as possible. Best wishes for you baby. |
1 Attachment(s) Thank you Kristin. I checked for hair or dirt and didn't find anything. I checked for a hole in the outer layer but couldn't see anything. I did see some irritation on the inside of her lower eyelid. It's red and swollen, in the picture you can kinda see it. And the eye has gray/brownish muck. I'm not sure if I can go to the emergency vet cause we don't have a car and don't trust leaving the house this late with a taxi. When the bus and tram start running again (@ 7am) I'll call the emergency vet. |
If you have a cone e-collar, I would put that on Nena. Socks will help, but cone would be better to prevent her from scratching. Hopefully the doctor will be able to see you in the morning. Keep us updated. |
I will do Kristin. The bus starts running at 6 in the morning. One more hour and I'll call the vet |
Yay! I wasn't sure of the time difference. I think I told you before that I am half Dutch, and my full Dutch father tells me I am half perfect. ;) I'll watch for your updates. The doctor should be able to give you drops or a salve that will help Nena recover quickly. |
I called the vet. He said that because it's not life threatening that I should call around 9am to make an appointment. |

Just seeing this. Hope all goes well at the vet! |
Poor Nena she looks so miserable :( I hope it isn't anything serious and can be treated with meds. Will be watching for updates and praying she starts to feel better soon. |
1 Attachment(s) We are back from the vet. Thank God it wasn't anything bad. She had a grass leave/hair deep in her eye (see pic). I still get the shivers of thinking that she had that in her eye. The vet took it out with tweezers and gave me a antibiotic cream for her eye. Thanks for all the support and thoughts :) It really helped while being in the situation of not being able to do much. |
Poor Nena! You must be very relieved. I'm happy for both of you that the doctor was able to get the grass out. I think that is a Foxtail grass part, and they can cause so many problems getting in the eyes, nose, mouth and skin. If you can, avoid areas where you see them. Foxtails: Why They're Dangerous for Dogs Wishing Nena a speedy recovery and hoping you can catch up on your sleep. |
Thanks Kristin :) I am very relieved! Even though the bill was unbelievable I'm glad it's over. It's funny, a couple of weeks ago the vet posted a case on facebook about two dogs that had foxtails. One in his ears and the other in his nose. When the vet told me what it was, I remembered the case. I'll try to be careful when taking the out but the foxtails are everywhere! I did sleep like 3 hours or so :) I do feel tired but don't wanna leave the dogs alone. It's Nena's b-day so she'll get a lot of hugs and kisses during the day :) |
Poor thing! So glad you took her to the vet, she must feel better already. |
