Diabetic ??? My boy, Benji , was 19 lbs and over weight 2 months ago .... we stopped ALL treats hoping for him to lose some weight ..... he is now down to 11.5 lbs ... He started drinking alot of water and peeing alot a week ago .... Went to the vet today , AND THEY KEPT HIM . His glucose was 560 ...off the charts !! I am so scared . Will he stablize and be ok ??? They want to bring it down , then have us come in for instructions on diabetic care .... Any advice ?? Will this be expensive ?? We have 2 other dogs ... do I feed them all the diabetic diet ??? |
I m sorry to hear about Benji. I have never had any experience with a diabetic dog but hopefully someone who has will see this soon. I do know they can be treated pretty successfully. I hope everything works out ok for you both. |
I don't have any experience w/diabedic dogs either, but just wanted to send Benji a get well soon wish. I know a special diet needs to be given & he should be fine, hopefully won't need any insulin, but might need to get poked to test his glucose level. |
His glucose level went down from 576 o 409 ...he has been given insulin ..will stay at the vet hospital a few days until it gets normal and stabilizes .... then we may need to give him the shots daily forever .... poor lil thing !!! |
He will be ok! We (Yorkie Haven Rescue) have a foster in NC who is diabetic. He gets insulin twice daily and has been with his foster home for some time. A wonderful family is adopting him!! :) He does very well. I don't have any first hand experience, but just want you to know that I have seen many over the years who did very well. Once you get into a routine, I am sure it will all go well! :) Please keep us updated...I will be interested in hearing how things go! |
Oh no I'm sorry. My Mom's cat ( 7 years old) was just diagnosed Diabetic. My Mom has to have her on special food, and has to give her 2 injections daily. Once you get the hang of things it really isn't a big deal, I wouldn't stress on it too much!! The medicine is pretty expensive, however she is able to order it through CVS, well the needles I believe she still has to get the meds from her Vet.. However I heard you can get Pet RX's from Walmart..?? I wonder if you can get the meds from there.. Hmm I will have to check that out! |
One of our little mini schnauzers was diabetic. I gave him 2 shots a day of Humlin N, which is a human insulin. He did fairly well. Its important they get their shot and eat at the same time everyday. No treats and you have to be careful what you feed. Good luck with your baby. Its hard on them too. Oh, and also I bought the 31 gauge needle, which is a smaller needle and short. |

I'm sorry your little one is going through this. I hope he is home quickly. And yes, both Target and Walmart will fill vet prescriptions. |
Hang in there, it will be okay :). Thankfully, diabetes is a disease that is quite easily managed with insulin. I'm not sure whether they'll put your kiddo on a lower carb/higher protein diet but if they do...it's okay. Your other dogs can also have higher protein, as long as they don't have some underlying disease that contraindicates it. Lots of us here have our dogs on higher protein diets since canines are designed to have a lot of protein in their diets. Please keep us posted! |
