Axel not well Someone please help!! I took Axel to groomers on Saturday and I now have a sick baby on my hands. Axel came home acting very standoffish. He was supposed to have anal glands expressed well he has been not skooting across the floor but quickly walking to where he wants to be so that he can sit down as if he is getting relief in his bottom by sitting. He walks as if he is getting in position to go potty and heis constantly biting around his tail and anal area. I took him to the vet today to be checked they gave me some stuff for him but I feel so awful for him and hope that he is not in any pain. He is also not as playful as he normally is and wont come to me when I call him anymore. Has anyone else experienced this or can give me some idea about what I can do to help my poor baby? |
No.I haven't had this problem. I'm wondering if you can let him just sit in warm water? Maybe it will soothe the discomfort he seems to be in. How much does he weigh? The vet allows Jasper 1/2 of a St. Joseph Baby Aspirin for pain. He weighs 3.5 pounds. I would call and ask your vet before giving him any though. Did the vet check him internally? Is he swollen and has he been able to poop yet? Hopefully, someone else will be able to help you who has had the same problem. Thoughts and prayers for your baby. |
Steph, thanks for the reply. Axel is 6 pounds. I thought about doing the warm water may try that. The vet just checked his anal glands which needed to be expressed, I guess they didn't do it at the groomers on Saturday, but will be calling them today to try and determine exactly what they did. Thanks so much! |
Yes I would call them too. Did the vet say if they were impacted ? |
Yes, this exact thing happened to Lexi when she was last groomed. I was so mad at myself because I never intended to have her anal glands expressed, but I forgot to tell the groomer so she did them. When she came home, she wouldn't walk more than a few steps without sitting down and quickly snatching her head around to her back end. She was so uncomfortable and I felt awful. It lasted about 2 days and she was back to normal. I don't know what the groomer did but I'm sure she irritated them in some way. Just thinking about it now I'm still mad a myself for forgetting to tell the groomer not to express her anals. If she's not having a problem I'd just rather they leave them alone. And, if she does need them done, I'd rather have it done at the vet. |
The vet did say that his anal glands had fluid in them, which is surprising because when I called the groomers today she said that they did express them but in the bath, really? She said that Axel may have a touch of acid reflux, when I asked the groomer what that had to do with the problems he is having with his rear she said that it may be irritable when he goes to the bathroom. So got home today and he was actually feeling a little better, he is running and playing still sitting on bottom, not as much, and is finally eating!!! I will keep putting the ointment on him for now and will only let the vet express his glands from now on. I don't want to ever put him or myself through this again!! |
I'm so glad Axel is feeling better! It sounds like his little bum is healing at the same rate as Lexi's. Another day or two and he'll be good as new. I sure wish groomers would ask if we want this done instead of just including it with the grooming service. I'm afraid that even if I tell them I don't want it, they may forget and do it anyway, since it's so routine for them. Acid Reflux?!!:mad::mad: |
Did they shave the hair around the anus? This could also irritate for a few days if too close. |
dog Those groomers, please be very careful who you choose to touch your dog. Seriously, some groomers hit the dogs with hairbrushes, treat them very cruelly to make them calm down. My Tuffy came home very skiddish and acted like he was hurt after a groomer trip. No more. I have my own personal groomer come to the house and I am there. She is kind and gentle and would never hurt my dogs. You must be careful when you leave your dog. Some groomers are there for the bucks and have no love for animals. I am glad your precious dog is better! I would call that shop and complain because they hurt your dog. I would send them the vet bill too. I hate it when dogs are mistreated especially from groomers! |
