Completely Overwhelmed I don't post often but am at a complete loss. My yorkie is going to be 7 in October, and is a little on the chunky side (13 lbs). On Saturday she attempted to jump onto the couch and missed, falling back. She instantly lifted her back leg up and didn't put any weight on it. I wasn't sure if she may have just sprained it because she didn't make any noise and I was able to push and touch it. Sunday morning it was no better, so I took her to the vet's office. She had x-rays done, which concluded that she has luxating patellas (grade 3) and they are recommending surgery. Now, like most of us on this site- our babies are our lives. My Bella is my world, and I will do anything in my power to get her better. Any advice will be helpful. I have been up researching since Sunday. The entire thing is making me sick, thinking she might be in pain and just not showing it. The vet gave her Rimadel (spelling?), and she has to be seen by the ortho surgeon on Friday. But she still is hopping on 3 legs, and can't put weight down. *ugh* So overwhelmed! |
Well the main thing is when pets have LP’s that high is to watch their weight. My Vet said Peanut is at a 3 and 4, however if I keep his weight low ( 4 pounds) and I don’t allow him to do any major running jumping, he should be ok- he only limps every once in awhile and he doesn't really limp he just does a little skip. I have noticed in the winter it bothers him more, but he is never in pain. I would start to get her weight down, can you do light exercising with her? Don't let her gain anymore weight. I would go see you Ortho and see what he says.. make sure he is highly recommended, and experienced in smaller breeds. Try to let her take it easy, make her rest as much as you can. ((HUGS)) I know how stressful it is, but thankfully it can be fixed. |

I am sorry to hear about your baby. My Cali who is 8 has grade 4 LP in both knees. Her vet and I are taking a wait and see approach as it doesn't seem to cause her any pain. I don't let her jump much at all. My Pixie on the other hand was fine and then one day a rescue I took in scared her and she walked off the end of the bed. She wouldn't walk on it and kept falling over. I got 4 opinions (2 er vets my vet and an orthopedic surgeon.) Based on their advice I had surgery on her knee. Sometimes I wonder if I should have given it more time to see if crate rest would have helped. All of mine were overweight, I switched their food and they are all at great weights now. I hope your baby can avoid surgery. Keep us posted. |
Many ppl let there dogs over eat. Doesn't take much for a small dog. IMO there food should be weight and feed 2-3x a day. But hip bones shouldn't be visible but felt. Its easy to love your dog with food. And they always beg and seem Hungry. But for there healthy they shouldn't be overfeed. JMO |

Another thing you can try is a cold pack. I have several ones of different sizes, I keep in the freezer, get the kind with the Velcro fasteners. If you do a google search, under pet cold wraps, there are several companies that will sell them for different parts of the canine body. They are pricier than the drug store brands though. Getting and keeping the weight down like everyone else said is important too. |
