HELP!! VERY sick yorkie after shot at vet!! If anybody has had this happen, PLEASE let me know what I can do!! I took Deuce in today for his booster...(that's what I thought). He screamed when my vet gave him the shot and pulled away before the vet was through..so he had to do it again. He screamed worse...then I put him in his crate to take him home and he has been SO SICK ever since!! He won't eat, play or anything. He screams if you touch him. I called the vet back and told him what was going on. They told me to rush him back there. I did. The vet looked at him and said "I think he's just sore from the shot" I told him this is NOT Deuce. He NEVER acts like this. He put him on the floor to see if he could walk, and he did..then just sat down. We took his temp, it was fine. My vet then gave him another shot (just in case he's having a reaction to the distemper/parvo shot. PLEASE if ANYBODY has any experience with this happening.....email me at bgeier123@hotmail.com or post here...I will stay online. I feel SO GUILTY and have been crying over this...He just lays there and won't move...cries if I try to gently move him. I'm scared to death and love him SO MUCH.. |
My female had a reaction to a shot she would cry and not let you hold her. I gave her 1/2 of a baby asprin. She was okay by the next day. I would just keep an eye on him and if hes not back to normal by tomorrow I would take him back to the vet. |
Oh I hate hearing this but he could be doing alot of things - 1. he COULD be upset - 2. he is probably sore and 3. he may be having a reaction to the shot and watch him very carefully - all yorkies seem to react differently to shots and while I never had any reactions with my girls - they did have sore spots - but they were much better the next day Do you know what shots he had ? Next time - maybe have them space them out more .....we also were given a baby asprin - they sent me home with a Johnsons baby asprin and cut up - but ASK YOUR VET first if this is ok ! |
Same thing.. I remember several years ago when I had a Chihuahua, the same thing happened with her. She wouldn't let you touch her. She was very depressed and sore from the shots. She began to get a lump on her back and she would scream if you came near it. It turned out that she had an allergic reation to the shots. It's a good thing you took him back. If he is having a reaction to the shots, it has already been taken care of. My little boy yorkie recently had his annual shots. He was slow and sick for 3 days after. Every dog is different. Also, they can sometimes get a little traumatized from the pain of it and from the idea of the vet and humans in general. Don't worry. Your little one will forget about it when he starts feeling better ;) I know how you feel...It's painful to watch them go through it. :( |
Same thing happened with my fathers Yorkie. He was sore, little and scared. I would suggest make sure you have some Nutri-Stat in case he 'pouts' and doesn't want to eat. Keep a close eye on him and give him lots of lovin'! |
I'm sorry your baby had a reaction to the shots, hopefully by tomorrow he will be feeling better. I can imagine how bad it must be just seeing him lay around and scream when you touch him... |
Cali had a bad reaction to the first set of shots given to her by my vet. After that they give her pain drops after each shot and she has been fine. |
Some vets use lepto and corona in the multi-serum vaccine. A few Yorkies will react to either of those. But, because we use the serum that has so many vaccines in it. we cannot tell what the problem is. If your vet gave the shot in the muscle, IM, and not sub-q your baby could be have a little extra pain. I agree with the others,, watch her, ask the vet about aspirin, maybe a warm or cool cloth and don't make a really big pity party about it. Yeah, right! How is that gonna happen? LOL Seriously, check temp before bed and keep her in your sight. Bet she will be fine by the morning..Did the vet give steroids or Benadryl in the second shot?? |
thank you Thank you all for the posts, it makes me feel better...like maybe he isn't going to die. It just kills me to watch him lay there so still and sick. I called my breeder, Pam Martin and she said she's never had one react like that and that he was too young in her opionion to have the parvo/distemper shot..supposed to get it in two more weeks. He's just 14 weeks today..plus he had his rabies shot a week ago and 2weeks before that a round of shots (on schedule) at Pam's. She told me to give him Nutri stat and then water..she stayed on the phone with me all the time I was crying my eyes out and she could hear him crying. After I hung up with her, I cooked him some hamburger (his favorite) and took it to him ..he ate THREE lids full!! I feel MUCh better now...he's still sleeping and probably will until tomorrow afternoon. Of course, he's right beside me or in my lap at all times. If he's not better by tomorrow afternoon, he's going back..and I have the vet's home number for tonight in case. I can't believe how attached I've become to him in just ONE WEEK. He's my baby boy. |
2nd shot...antihistimine 2nd shot was an antihistimine (sp?) I think..he never did say, but the vet helper assumed...and that's what she said. I do think he'll get better b/c he ate all that hamburger..from his bed beside me out of my hand (three lids full!) then right back to sleep after licking water from my fingers. He only weights 2 lbs. 4 oz.. and is so precious and dependent. I don't know what I'd do if anything happened to him. At least he ate something...we'll see what morning brings. I don't have a thermometer here for puppies, but am getting one tomorrow!!! |
I hope he's all better by the morning. Give him an extra hug from me, too. :) |
Oh Brenda! I am still Praying for your little man! I will have trouble sleeping tonight just thinking about you two! Please post in the AM, I will be looking for an update! God Bless, and keep him. |
I have heard that LEPTO shot makes many Yorkies ill. There is no real reason to givr it, so I never did. Also, after a oarvo shot Ralphie was sore and screamed in pain when I tried to pick him up..it took a day for the soreness to go away. I waited till he was a year old to give him rabies shot for the same reason. |
You should find out if the Lepto was in the shot. When Lucky got his 2nd set of shots it had Lepto in it & he screamed & reacted the way you described. So, after that I switched vets (didn't really like them much anyway) & made sure that he didn't get the last 2 sets w/ Lepto in it. Also, they say to wait till they are 6 months to get the Rabies shot. (a little late now since he already got it) But I hope he's feeling better & please keep us updated! |
So how is Duece today? Hope he is feeling better. Sending hugs your way |
My female yorkie would always get sick and stay in her crate for a few days and be very sore until 2 years ago, my vet and I decided to stop giving her Lepto. Since then, she is fine and you would never even know she had any shots at all. You may want to talk to your vet about the Lepto injection. Good luck. |
He is not going to like that bad old vet!! lol Sounds like your vet did some preventive maintenance with the last shot though. I bet everything will be just fine. Tomorrow he may still be a little sore and may even have a bump but everything will be fine. |
Update!!!!! 1 Attachment(s) Deuce is 90% this morning! And I have the picture to prove it! ;) This is Sadie, Brendas new female scloding Deuce for scaring us all! |
Lacey was the same way after having her shots. She would hide behind the couch and not come out at all. My dad and my brother actually got in a fist fight in the front yard. Because he thought my brother let Lacey out when he went out with his friends. He actually thought she was missing when she was hiding behind the couch the whole time. We called her name over and over and she ignored us. She was hiding so well, we did not even see her behind the couch at all. She started barking when she heard my brother and my dad fighting outside all over her! That is when we knew she was in the house the whole entire time and they were fighting for nothing! Lacey was always fine in a day or so, but everytime you brought her to the vet for shots, she did not want anything to do with you. |
Kathryn Kathryn, That is SUCH a cute pic. But I am confused  ...why does it look like there is just another doggie's face in the pic? Is it a mirror? LOL |
When we got Missy 4 weeks ago, we changed vets as the one we had been using had a nice big newer building and much higher prices$$$$ Anyway, we were telling the new vet that our older Yorkie, Muffie, had problems several times with shots; not eating, couldn't walk one time for a couple days when shot was given in HIP, lethargic. She was like that 2-3 days! New vet said it was probably the Lepko in the shot. Sooo, he did NOT include that in either of Missy's shots. Hope he's feeling better by now. HAPPY NEW YEAR TO ALL! |
no.... that is Casie on top of Deuce! She is teaching him a lesson after scaring us over that widdle shot! As you can see he is playing just fine now and is doing his best to fend off Cassie. Aren't they cute? And FYI these are Brendas pups... Cassie is a bit older than Deuce so hence much bigger. |
I didnt read the entire thread but to ease reactions and discomfort give him/her baby benadryl a hour or so before your appointment. Us breeders can never say it enough times stress to your vet DO NOT USE LEPTO. glad your baby is better |
I have read that many times, but I have not seen an explanation as to why. I'm sure its out there, I have just not come across it yet.. I can assume it is because of some reaction, but what is the Pathology behind it? What makes it hard so hard for the little guys? And last but not least what are the options for someone wanting to exclude this, is there a Sub? I think this would be good info for anyone with a young pup! |
Thanks for the explaination! LOL It still to me looks like a face in the middle of no where! I love it! :animal36 |
I have checked my Vet. Drug Reference and Merck Vet Manual and neither has an explanation as to why the dogs react to lepto in the vaccine..Actuall, there is little need to give the lepto vaccine as a routine. Each case has to be decided based on the presence or absence of the disease in the vicinity where we live or where we plan to travel with our dogs. That is all I can find in the books. But, probably someone who is really expert at looking things up on the net might find more.... There are many 5 way vaccines that do not contain lepto or corona...or each vaccine can be given individually..Do not give rabies vaccines within 2 weeks of the other vaccines...Stresses the immune system is what I have been told. Anyway, I follow that advice.. |
links re; lepto Lepto is, for a variety of reasons, a vaccine where the risk vs benefit analysis changes tremendously from case to case. First, lepto vaccine causes more adverse reactions than any other canine vaccine. http://www.caberfeidh.com/Lepto.htm Lepto vaccines, however, are not recommended unless there is a disease problem in the area. The vaccines help lessen the severity of the disease but do not prevent it (3) and may not be effective for more than six months. Furthermore, puppies and small dogs can have adverse reactions to the vaccines. Therefore, many veterinarians do not recommend inoculation against leptospirosis. However, if a lepto outbreak occurs and veterinarians do recommend vaccination, dogs should be inoculated against all four strains of the disease unless the particular strain is identified. http://www.canismajor.com/dog/disease1.html#Lept VACCINATIONS NOT RECOMMENDED Multiple components in vaccines compete with each other for the immune system and result in lesser immunity for each individual disease as well as increasing the risk of a reaction. "Canine Corona Virus is only a disease of puppies. It is rare, self limiting (dogs get well in 3 days without treatment). Cornell & TexaA&M have only diagnosed one case each in the last 7 years. Corona virus does not cause disease in adult dogs. "Leptospirosis vaccine is a common cause of adverse reactions in dogs. Most of the clinical cases of lepto reported in dogs in the US are caused by serovaars (or types) grippotyphosa and bratsilvia. The vaccines contain different serovaars eanicola and ictohemorrhagica. Cross protection is not provided and protection is short lived. Lepto vaccine is immuno-supressive to puppies less than 16 weeks. http://www.shalako.com/vaccine.htm |
Great info! Thank you so much! |
I would urge all yorkie owners but especially those getting new puppies about the potential side effects of certain vaccines and how easy it is to over-vaccinate and the serious health risks which can occur as a result. There are many threads on here where this topic has been discussed passionately and I hope all pet parents should read up and educate themselves and come up with a vaccination schedule that is customized to their dog because it should not be one schedule suits all. A few things most experienced yorkie owners will agree on I think are: 1. No lepto 2. No combo shots (one at a time with several weeks in between) 3. No unnecessary shots 4. Rabies only if required by law and a problem in your area and given as late as possible...preferable at one year of age and not before. Here is a thread link to get you started with lots of good internet sites to branch off to and further your research.http://www.yorkietalk.com/forums/sho...ht=vaccination |
