Legge Calve Perthes? Patella or ACL? I am very worried about my Rubi. My little 9 month old started limping last week. At first I figured it was just her usual running around like a maniac or a walk that caused it. Now I am worried. She goes to the vet tomorrow at 4 pm. Being a physical therapist armed with way to much orthopedic information, I am guessing ACL, patella subluxation or Legge Calve Perthes disease. Sometime she puts a little weight on the leg walking, but hardly ever when she runs and she is not the maniac she normally is. She also has a tougher time jumping up on the couch, the day before yesterday she couldn't really do it by afternoon time, I think she was fatigued on her injured side. I have tried palpating the area, but Rubi doesn't stay still and doesn't want me to palpate her good leg either. So I guess we wait for the X-ray tomorrow. In the meantime I am worried! Also, she probably needs at least 2 baby teeth taken out, but I am not worried about that as much since it seems like an easier fix. The Legge Calve Perthes disease surgery looks horrible, taking the whole humeral head out, yikes. :( I am on high anxiety as I love my little girl so much. |
My Zoey had legge calve parthes disease at 1yr 8 mos. I got three opinions and she had the surgery. The orthopedic surgeon kept her at his home for five days after surgery. He said they usually keep them longer but she was doing so well he sent her home. It was a LONG rehab but she recovered very well. |
Hopefully her leg is just sore and not a more serious problem. I would try and keep her from jumping if you can for a few days to give her time to heal. Pixie had surgery for her LP because she had a hard time walking with it. My Cali has grade 4 in both knees and so far she has avoided surgery. All of mine use ramps to get up and down which helps their knees. Please let us know how the vet visit goes. |
I should try getting a ramp for the sofa. It was funny the other night I got some old heavy textbooks out and put them down like steps. She decided she would rather chew on them. So I gave up that idea. Rubi normally loves jumping up and down. I have a feeling I will have to live my life on my floor if I don't get her something. |
Hoping that you get good news when you go to the vet. Please keep us updated |
As I was touching her leg tonight I noticed she is more sensitive around the knees. The patella thing makes sense since it seems to come and go upon occasion. I can't imagine how tiny that bone must be on a Yorkie. It isn't very big on a person. |
We went to the vet today and the vet thinks it might be the hip, but Rubi is such a fighter she couldn't do a good physical exam. She'd already eaten, so we decided she could do the x-ray tomorrow while she was removing 2 of her baby teeth. She gave me some tramadol for her pain and we will know more by tomorrow night. |
I hope the X ray can diagnose the cause and Rubi feels better soon. |
Unfortunately it is Legg-Calve-Perthes. Fortunately her other hip is normal. She is to have surgery on Thursday, which is supposed to be 90% effective, and I have become more comfortable since reading about the surgery. It will be a difficult rehab for my little girl, but her and I should do okay. I feel a little more confident being a physical therapist with an orthopedic background. The scary part is none of my patient's have ever been a 6 1/2 lb Yorkie so I shall follow the surgeons advice to the letter. I am trying to be brave, but my heart does break for her. |

Your profession will be very useful in the rehab. Let us know how it goes. |
Already watching the dog physical therapy videos and bought a book on rehab for femoral head osteotomy. I watched the surgery on Youtube today. It helped me to better understand how they can function w/o a femoral head. I will be happy when we are on the rehab phase, but will definitely be working with the vet's guidance. I think Rubi's natural desire to be active will do a lot of it too.:) |
That is great I am sure you will do well with your pup. And I hope you have notified the breeder, as this is a genetic diseases, and that breeder needs to know. |
I will, but I checked the health agreement, and it doesn't affect her financially, so she might not care. I will definitely let her know. I would never let Rubi go anyway. I just figure we came together for a reason and I just love her too much to do anything, but help her. She is such a trooper. In spite of her pain, the cable TV guy came today and said, "I have never seen such a happy puppy." She charms everyone she meets. I finally got some pain medication down her tonight. She will take it if I mix it with a little sugar. I tried cheese and peanut butter, but she would rather lick it out of my hand mixed with a little sugar. |
My dog has this disease. He's not a puppy so surgery will be done when he becomes clinically affected. I would only have a board certified surgeon perform the surgery and for now my dog is monitored yearly by a diplomat of the ACVS. By the way, the rehab for FHO in dogs is quite easy compared with CCL or patellar issues. |
