Possible Liver Shunt in 8 week old yorkie Has anyone ever dealt with liver shunt in a young puppy? I have a litter of 5 girls and they will be 8 weeks old tomorrow. One of them became sick with vomiting and diarrhea Friday late in the day. Took her in on Sat. to the vet who thought she might have coccidia (not sure) but she treated her by giving her a shot. She didnt improve on Sat. so we met the vet back on Sun and put her on an IV until yesterday. She doesnt eat so we are dropper feeding her Pediasure Sidekicks and this is keeping her going. She has not had any symptoms that I would consider liver shunt. The vet did a blood panel and the only significant thing was pancreas inflamed. We have an appt. tomorrow at 10 in Auburn at the University Small Animal Hospital for a liver shunt workup. Please keep this little girl in your prayers. Thanks. Julia |
Sending wishes your way for a good outcome for this little girl. |
I hope it goes well and will be praying for you and your pup. |
Awe, poor little puppy girl! Sending get well wishes. |
Praying for your precious little soul....You are certainly providing the best of care...the rest is in Gods hands..... |
Did she actually test positive for coccidia? I haven't heard of a shot for it, just the oral meds. Did you check and treat the other pups? Haven't heard of shunt in one that young before, but I am sure you are doing all the right things in getting her checked out further. Healing thoughts and prayers are going out for her. |
So sorry to hear about your little having such a hard time. My little girl is 5 months and just diagnosed with a liver shunt.. She had symptom of poor appetite and hypoglycemia. She also hasn't grown. She is only 1.5 pounds. I had to force feed her most of time. I have put her on a low protein diet for 4 days and now she has been eating on her own. Putting her on meds tomorrow and hopefully surgery in a couple of weeks. Hope everything goes well with your little one and keep us posted. Will be thinking about her. |
Julia, I'm just now seeing this. I am so sorry this baby is going thru this. You are doing all you can. I will check back later to see what Auburn says today. Prayers. |
Good News On 8 Week Old Yorkie Thank you all so much for the prayers and support with my little one. We spent the day at Auburn but we did get an answer. First of all, no shunts. That was the big thing. The parents had been bile acid tested several years ago but I knew if she had a shunt, then I had four more 8 week old girls with possibility of shunts and that would be beyond belief. She does have an inflamed pancreas and has to be on meds and special diet for 3 months. She is not a big eater anyway so I know it will be fun getting her to eat special food. She was the second puppy that the specialist had seen with pancreatic problems at her age. The bloodwork and results of the ultrasound done by the vets in Dothan were sent to Auburn and at the end of the day the specialist said my local vets should have been alerted by the bloodwork to the possibility of a pancreatic problem; however, since it is rare he eliminated everthing he could possibly think would cause her symptoms first. Doesnt give me a lot of confidence in my local vets. He thought it was caused by a virus and that had been the initial problem with her throwing up and her diarrhea. She had lost down to 1 lb. exactly. She wasn't big to start with but from 1 lb. 6 oz. to 1 lb. and that is a big loss for her. We have to poke the food down her if necessary. The Intern told me her little feet hadnt touched the floor from 10 a.m. until we picked her up at 5 p.m. She is very loving and they had passed her around all day. She slept all the way home last night. JuliaAgain, thanks so much for the encouragement. You guys are great. |
Happy to hear the good news of no shunt. Sorry though that you have to deal with pancreatic issues. Hope she makes a great recovery, and eventually is able to eat and process food normally. |
I am so sorry. I hope she improves and everything works out okay. Keep us posted please. I noticed someone had mentioned that yours and mine were so young and they thought of liver shunt in older dogs. There are 2 kinds of shunts. The congenital shunt that usually shows up early in puppies usually before a year old and the acquired shunt that shows up later in life. I had a 9 1/2 year old that I took in after her owner passed away and she was diagnosed with an acquired shunt. They dont even consider surgery anymore for older dogs because with the acquired shunt the liver is usually damaged beyond repairing itself and to do a shunt with a non-functioning liver, the dog would probably die during surgery. With the younger ones, they put the constricter on the shunt and it closes gradually by swelling and slowly closing off the shunt and gives the liver time to recover and regenerate and doesnt shock the liver by closing off all at once. Liver shunt is so horrible. I lost the 9 1/2 year old is less than 2 weeks. |
My husband took her in and came home with meds for the other pups and both parents for coccidia. I doubt she ever had coccidia and surely they did a fecal before prescribing. The meds that I gave the others at home was a white paste. I had never heard of that because I took in a rescue with coccidia and gave him Albon for a week so I have no idea what she was given, but since my Auburn visit I am going in to talk with the one who treated her. According to Auburn, they should have picked up on her problem with the blood results. Just makes me angry. We spent an entire day, spent $800 to go to a specialist, and put my poor baby through a horrible week for something that should have been caught here. Doesnt inspire confidence in the vet for sure. Thank you all for the good thoughts and support. |
I treat coccidia when I have encountered it, with Albon, Amoxicillin, and Flagyl.....that combination, mixed together and given for 7-10 days, knocks it right out. The "paste" may have been the Flagyl....(Metronidazole).....but it taste HORRID!!! which is why I always crush the tablets and mix it in with the "bubble gum" Amoxicillin and the custard tasting Albon......makes it much more palitable for the pup..... |
