OMG It's THREADWORMS - Help I have a 11 week old Yorkie Puppy Rosie. We bought her 3 weeks ago and yes I did a lot of research. 2 days after we got her she started to cough. The vet said it was kennel cough and put her on antibiotics as well as cough medicine. A couple of days later she seemed worse took her back to the vet and he gave her more medicine. A few days later she was worse again and the vet was not in (vet was referred by breeder) I took her to the vet I used on my last baby and found she was totally infested with strongyloides (threadworms). Yuk!!! She has been on panacure for 5 days as well as amoxicillian, cough meds, and we use revolution. She seemed to be improving but today she is much worse. I don't know what else to do she has been sick since we got her - I have taken to the vet a total of 7 times. Any suggestions? Of course the breeder is of no help! |
I am sorry your baby is sick. was there any kind of health guarantee? morgan's breeder retired after I bought him so his guarantee is not any good and he has dry eyes, glaucoma and LP. some of the other people with more experience will probably be able to offer some suggestions |
Hi and Welcome to YT! I'm so sorry your puppy is sick... With puppies that young, whenever they aren't doing better, I'd be taking her back to see the vet. She may need supportive medical care to get through this. |
broken heart As for the guarantee it is only for genetic defects. The vet said she had the threadworms before I got her since she is so infested and probably came from the mother dog. These are rare and humans can get them and are easily transmitted since they can live outside the host. If humans get them they can stay dormant after treatment forever. You never really get rid of them. I don't know what to do. The breeder is of no help since I received the puppy. I can't even find anyone who has had threadworms in a dog. I'm afraid she's going to die and that my family is going to get them. |

I am so very sorry your going through this with your baby. Prayers going out that Rosie will be just fine. |
Thanks for your concern. Just got back from the vet and the worms are gone. Thank goodness I was so concerned about my family as well as little Rosie. We're not out of the woods yet - she's not digesting her food, I think she said the intestines are not working properly and her stomach is torn up from the worms and some of the medication. It depends on how strong her immune system is if she will make it thru this. I contacted the agricultural department and I am going to file a complaint against the breeder. They said they will go to the property and do a complete investigation. I wouldn't want any other puppy and potential owners to go thru what my family has gone thru. |

Ive never gone through this but I hope your baby makes a full recovery! |
Sending love and prayers to Rosie. Poor little lady, I bet the medicines make it hard for her little tummy to digest and she's so little, her body is just figuring out how it all works! Try to stay positive and keep us posted, I know everyone will keep the love and prayers coming! I'm new here too and think YT is just a wonderful community, I've found amazing support here, I hope you do too. Wishing Rosie back to health very soon! :getwellso |
sending you prayers |
So sorry to hear about the rough start with your sweet baby girl Rosie. I agree with kjc about trying probiotics. Sending prayers and best wishes to Rosie for a speedy and complete recovery. I would also recommend getting pet insurance since your breeder's concern with hygiene and health issues are questionable and your babies start in life has been compromised. This way you are covered in case any future issues arise. I am so sorry you had such an emotional start when I first brought home Buster he too was very sick from a bad breeder. PS Hi and welcome to YT |
I am so sorry your baby is sick. I also encourage the use of probiotics. here is the link to the puppy lemon law in Arizona: Puppy Lemon Law - Arizona I will say again for future readers to this post; do not take a puppy under 12 wks old that doesn't weigh in at least 2lbs. |
I'm so very sorry that baby Rosie has had such a rough time and been so sick. I'm praying she will get over everything and be back to doing all things puppy very, very soon!! |
