Falling over? Seizure? Hello, my first posting on this forum, but it has been a wealth of information, so thank you all for the great information on this site. I have a 12 week old yorkie who weighs 2lbs. I've had her for 4 weeks and everything has been great, she's a great dog. She just went to the vet 2 days ago and he checked her out, and said she looks perfectly healthy, she received her booster vaccines and deworming. I've noticed now for probably about a week or so that occasionally she will look up at either me or something of interest and look like she is sniffing and she seems to lose balance and almost fall over or actually fall over. She immediately gets right back up and is completely fine. Based on my reading, I can't determine what this is. It doesn't seem to be a seizure, but I could be wrong. She doesn't have any other noticeable symptoms, but I don't feel like she should be falling over. She does this at least a few times a day. Any ideas? |
I've sent a note to the moderator to move this too the sick/injured thread so it gets more views. I hope someone can point you in the right direction. |
Welcome to YT! Sorry you're experiencing this w/your baby. They can lose their balance from having an ear infection, making them fall over to the side or walk wobbly. Liver issues also makes them act drunk or fall over. Neurological problems can make them do that too. There's many reasons why they can fall over, so a vet visit &/or getting referred to a specialist is a must to find out why. Hope it's nothing serious & hope she'll be ok! Please keep us posted. My Momo had a very bad ear infection when he was a puppy & his ear hung down from his head, it was lower than the other ear. It made him lose his balance & topple over to his side. A quick visit to the vet remedied the situation...hope this is the case for your baby. |
Thanks for the info. I've made a vet appt for tomorrow. I'm hoping it's nothing serious. |
May it could be low blood sugar since she still is small and a puppy. I hope your baby is ok. |
So I took her to the vet last night and the vet seems to think it could possibly be a liver shunt issue. He believes it was a neurological event. While there we did a blood test and everything came out normal. The vet wants to perform a bile acids test on her, so we have to go back and get that done sometime soon. That will clear up whether or not it's a shunt. If it's not a shunt, I have no idea what it could be... no hypoglycemia either. The good news is that for a 12 week old puppy she seems to be very smart. She sits, stays, lays down and even rolled over on command today! |
For both your sakes, I hope it's not liver shunt. Please keep us updated on her progress. There are multiple members here who have dealt with liver issues and can give you great advice and support. |
