Blood in Urine Bubba is 3 and in good general health. He is very active and loves to retrieve. He is a neutered male. No change in behaviors or signs of "feeling bad". Over the long Thanksgiving Holiday I noticed 2-3 droplets of red blood in his urine on pad. Next day no discoloration and no blood. All a.o.k. Developed an alergic reaction to "a flea" literally...a flea. Hot spot on tail developed in one day. Trip to vet, several steroid tabs, and antibiotics to clear up a "maybe" urinary tract invection although they really didn't think he had one. Guess they figured antibiotics would cure whatever might ail him!Hot spot cleared up in 2 days. Over the long Xmas Holdiay I noticed red blood in 3-4 urine spots on pad. Clearly, during these long holidays he gets to run and retrieve more than usual. Blood cleared up on Tuesday...none noticed but time to go to vet anyway. Had them run a blood test, urine test, and xray's to make sure nothing wrong internally that would show up on xray. All normal. Now, I'm at the point of "well doctor it hurts when I do this" so the doctor says "well, don't do that"! Anybody else seen this in neutered males? or females for that matter? |
I've never seen this, but you might want to try another vet. It seems like something I wouldn't want to let go, you know? I would want to get to the bottom of what the problem is. Good luck! |

Definitely get a second opinion...Blood in urine is not normal. My Miko had blood in his urine when he was about 6 months old and we took him to the vet. They did urine analysis and a urine culture, and they didn't think it was a UTI or a bacterial infection either, but they gave him antibiotics anyway. The blood cleared up and a few months later, he was urinating blood again...They found crystals and stones in his urine and he was having trouble passing them. I wanted to rule out the possibility of a liver shunt, so I decided to have him bile acid tested. To make a long story short, I ended up running full blood tests and urine tests along with the bile acid test, and he ended up having a liver shunt. Now this doesn't mean that he has a liver shunt, but he might have crystals or stones in his urine. Like I said, a second opinion might be good. |
I know a female Yorkie who lived in a terribly stressful home. She would have blood in her urine when the stress level was really high. When she came back to my friend for boarding, she was fine. She has been re-homed and as far as I know, she is well. Maybe it was just the stress of over-activity and new things that caused it, but I agree-I would want a second opinion.. |
My 9 year old mini wiener dog has has blood in her urine 2 different times. It was caused by a stone in her bladder. It will show up on an xray and they are quite sharp. One thing she had trouble holding her urine. That is one thing that indicates it. Hope this helps. :) |
Thanks to all. I've had all the tests other than bile done including x-rays that show no stones. I really think its the stress of the holidays. I will continue to monitor agressively though. |
Hopefully it was just stress like you said :) I'm so glad that they didn't find any stones in there! :) |
I have a 5 year old male Yorkie that also has this problem. I have taken him to the vet several times and all those tests mentioned were taken. $$$$$ I recently decided to have my Yorkie neutered because for the 2nd time in his short life he has had swollen testicles. Big time infection. The vet was hoping that getting him neutered would also stop the blood in his urine. Well, it hasn't. I have noticed one thing though: When my Yorkie is on Pet Tab vitamins he doesn't have this blood coming out. If I let a couple of days go by without the Pet Tabs then the blood comes back. Is this a simple solution or just a coincidence? |
