Vomiting blood and what appears to be coffee grinds I'm new to this site/forums My Dog Lola (4 years old) has been acting differently over the past 2 weeks. Not eating very much if any. Yesterday morning she threw up what appears to be coffee grinds and then this morning she threw up all blood. We took her into the vet ER this morning and they admitted her. I thought it was that parvovirus but she's been vaccinated and her shots are up to date, but her symptoms are very similar? The Vet said they would be running tests and would be keeping her at least 24 hours if not more to get an IV in her to take care of her dehydration and do some x-rays and blood work and administer some Anti-biotics. Up until about a week ago she's been perfectly fine and healthy. I'm really worried it may be a bleeding ulcer or hemo gastroenteritis? Has anyone experienced this in their dogs? She's just like another child in our family. Thanks in advance, Craig :aimeeyork |
Hi Craig, I'm sorry nobody has seen and answered your post yet. I don't have any answers for you on this. I'm glad you got her into the ER vet. Just wait and see what the test results are and go from there ok? I will keep your baby in my prayers! |
Could be a few things and thankfully right where she should be getting vitals support while undergoing testing. I'm praying for that baby and hoping your vets have an answer for you soon. Try to stay strong and visit her as soon as the vet says you can. Please keep us updated as you can. Poor little thing. And you, too. I know what you are going through and we're here for you. |
Good luck to both of you keep us updated |
I know that "coffee grind like stool" is a sign of old blood in humans, so I would gather it would be something similar. This is something I know from personal experience, please get her to a vet ASAP. Best wishes for a speedy recovery ~ hope Lola feels better soon! |
no advice but sending many prayers....for a diagnosis and complete recovery. |
First Welcome to YT!! Poor Lola, I’m sorry she is sick. To me it doesn't sound like Parvo. When they have Parvo they usually have really bad bloody diarrhea, and it has a really bad smell to it. I’m talking serious smell, like something you have never smelt in your life. I was able to research and found a couple websites for you: Coffee ground vomiting - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia http://pets.webmd.com/dogs/guide/_dog-vomiting http://www.justanswer.com/pet/1mpqp-...tuff-live.html Hopefully you are able to find out what is causing this and get her treated. I will be sending good thoughts and prayers for your sweet Lola. |
Welcome to yt. Sending prayers for Lola. Hope you get answers |
Thanks everyone Thank you everyone for your concern, the Vet called back they are going to keep her overnight. Still not sure what's going on but they are leaning towards Hemorrhagic gastroenteritis (HGE). They said they will be getting bloodwork back either tonight or tomorrow. Good thing is she has been on anti-biotics and they have an IV in her so at least she is re-hydrating. Should know more tomorrow, the Vet said they are going to try to feed her some bland food and see what happens. Thank you again for the prayers, so sad walking in the front door minus the greeting and little feet tapping on the pergo floor. Much Love, Craig |
Thank you for the links, I also googled the heck out of it and it leads me all back to the same possible thing Hemorrhagic gastroenteritis (HGE). Appreciate you taking the time to search as well. Have a great night! Craig |
I am just now seeing this thread ,computer has been down. I will be keeping you and your baby in my thoughts tonight. Please keep us updated. |
I hope your baby makes it through. From my history working with people, It sounds like a gastro track issue and could be something similar to enteritis or an ulcer. Please update! |
Just seeing this now. Hoping your baby makes a full and speedy recovery. She's at the vet, so that's the best place for her to be. |
Thanks for coming to update us. I'll bet HGE is the answer and am glad they are keeping her thru the night. Let us know what the tests say and how she did on the bland food. I know it is hard worrying and not having her with you. Hang in there! I am sure she will be home where she belongs soon. :) |
Just logged on and read through your thread. So glad you got Lola into the vet quickly. Prayers that she gets better soon. And welcome to yorkie talk |
