Chronic Hookworms that wont go away! Help! I have two Yorkies and we just keep getting worms. We have done numerous treatments with panacur. I have bleached, boraxed, and put bug killer down in the yard - but the worms just don't stop coming back. We will get the "all clear" from the vet, but its just a matter of time before they are back. We are on Trifexis, but even that does not seem to make it stop. Has anyone ever had this problem? Any remedy in sight?? My lil girls are tired of the worms, and for the first couple days after the medicine they seem to feel even worse. |

Hi, I don't have any advice, but would like to bump this thread so others who have knowledge will see it. I'm glad you've had them to the vet. I'm not glad the worms keep coming back! Did the vet suggest anything that you could do? I hope another member posts here with more experience! ((hugs)) Hang in there! I hope this problem ends soon for you! |
Do you pick up and dispose of all poop???? That would be my first guess at how they are getting them again. |

Could they be re-infecting themselves instead the house? Have you sanitized everything they come into contact with? Especially blankets, beds, toys, combs. etc. You have to clean up every piece of poop or may have been exposed to poop area. |
Internal Parasites What is the treatment? It is easy to get rid of the hookworms when an effective dewormer is used. We can decide which dewormer is right for your pet. We deworm all puppies and kittens every 3-4 weeks until they are 16 weeks of age, then we check a stool sample 1 month later. For adults we may deworm 1-2 times (1 month apart). Home care is important to be sure the pet does not get reinfected. Cleaning up stools daily is very important. Be sure to always wash your hands after handling your pet's stool. Hookworms can be very difficult to remove from the ground, making it difficult to prevent re-infestation if the pet has shed eggs onto the ground for a long period of time. Persistent infestations may need monthly treatment to prevent recurrence. |
I would go with Heartguard Plus to be honest...it's a monthly heartworm prevention, actually - but the "Plus" version also treats both hookworms and roundworms. ...I wouldn't keep pumping them with the other meds, even if they are prescribed by a vet. If they keep getting sick and feeling punky after every dose, that would be enough to make me stop giving it to them. We haven't had a problem with Heartguard Plus with regard to feeling ill or side effects. If your dogs are already on Heartguard, it's as simple as switching to Heartguard Plus (but NOT if they've been treated with other similar meds in recent days, as that would be too much for their little systems). If your dogs aren't on Heartguard at all, then you'll need a heartworm test to come back negative first, and then begin the Heartguard Plus. Just my two cents and I'm not an expert. :) |
You said your dogs are on Trifexis - I hope they're not getting meds from the vet during the same 2 week period (before or after) they've taken their Trifexis dose...that's an overdose and could be why they're getting sick after the meds. |
