Mucus poo on and off So I actually have a yorkie chihuahua mix and she is on a good food called freshdeli pet chicken and rice which keeps her poo very solid but i've noticed in the last few days and on occasion other days she will have a little mucus on her stool sometimes its more than other times. and even though there is some mucus, her stool is very solid, sh doesn't have diarrhea at all. its so inconsistent that it happens maybe once a day and then a few days later ill see it again. she has a tendency to eat leaves and bugs, and has gotten into eating bunny poo within the last two to three weeks. pretty much anything outside catches her attention so i try to steer her away but shes too fast and beats me to it. i'm wondering if any of these could be the cause to the mucus showing up sometimes. I know it would be concerning if this was a daily thing but its just so infrequent that I don't know if I should be worried or not especially since her level of activeness hasn't changed at all as well as her diet. |
Eating leaves and bugs can cause an irritation that will cause mucous. Bunny poop is a potential carrier of Lepto, so do everything possible to keep her away from that. From petMD: Quote:

thank you i will try to keep her away from the rabbit poo, i have been trying my best to throw it all out when i see it in the yard. sometimes theres quite a bit and its jelly like and sometimes there is very little . i have noticed though in the last week it only shows up when she poops when its cold or damp outside, during the day I have not really seen any mucus at all. |
Welcome to Yorkie Talk. You didn't mention how old your pup is, and how long this has been going on. If she is a very young pup I'd be more concerned and would have a vet checkup and take a stool sample. Mucous poo can be a sign of coccidia, or parvo, or liver disease on the scary side, or due to ingesting something irritating or toxic. Only a vet can tell you for sure, and it may be worth checking out. |

she is 15 months old and i did have a stool sample done that came back negative. i will be taking her to the vet tomorrow though |
i will also be asking the vet about this food. i was told it was supposed to be really good for them especially if they had sensitive stomachs :[ |
I would consider switching foods if it doesn't go away bc mucus can often be a sign of simple GI irritation. That said, you also want to be sure it's not a result of something more serious. Is the mucus surrounding the poo, or, does it come out just at the end? If it surrounds the poo, that can (not definitely though) mean the upset is coming from somewhere farther up in the GI system. If the mucus comes at the very end, then it can be her anal glands emptying a little. If her anal glands are emptying often, then again I'd lean toward changing foods. Def keep her away from bunny poo though, as you don't know what germs are in there that could make her very sick. |
