Pancreatitis My yorkie Mia has been diagnosed with panreatitis. This is my first experience with this so I'm trying to learn everything I need to know to get her well and keep her that way. She was in the hospital for 2 days on an IV. They let her come home because she was not throwing up or having diarrhea. I have not been able to get her to eat much more than a teaspoon or so in the mornings. She is drinking plenty of water and going potty. How long does it take before they start getting some energy back and an appetite? Any advice would be welcome! |
Aww I’m sorry- Peanut had pancreatitis too! I believe it was a Texas Toothpick and table food that set him off. He was in the hospital for 2 days, I was able to take him home at night. It was so hard seeing him sick.. Did the vet give you wet food to go home? That is what I was sent home with.. It was Hills Rx, can’t remember which one… Anyway he ate the wet food only for about a week. Then he started itching and pooping like crazy. The ingredients that were in it don’t do well with him. I called and talk to the Vet and he said it would be ok to change him back to his previous kibble. Since then Peanut gets 0 table food, unless it is good for him. Every so often he will get strawberries, cottage cheese.. but thats about it. He has been super healthy! |
I agree with Deanna. Uni has pancreatitis too. Hers was lamb that did it. Every dog is different. If you know what it was that set it off, that's better, you know what to avoid from now on. Some dogs it's cheese, others are beef. It just depends. We also got a Rx food, but also don't remember which one. Uni had bloody diarrhea for about two weeks. :( I was already stressing but if she were smaller, who knows what could have happened! Also, now that she's had it once, it's easily triggered to happen again, and sometimes not even with the same food! So I'd avoid all questionable foods from now on. For me that would be cheese (low fat cottage cheese ok), fatty and/or processed meats (burger, steak, hot dog, etc), pretty much anything with fat or oil on it I would skip. If you must give people food, stick with fruits and veggies. Mine love cucumber, tomato, lettuce, etc. |

She pretty much won't eat anything right now. I had boiled a piece of chicken and all she will do is lick the broth off it. We are out of town visiting family so we are seeing a vet we don't know. He sent us home on antibiotics and metrodiazanole. I'm worried she is still having pain. She is sitting here with me shivering. The vet office are closed today for July 4th. |
I also want to add, we did give Peanut a lot of cheese.. Like Uni he gets only things that I know won’t hurt him. He doesn't get cheese anymore, no dairy really. Like I said he only gets about a tablespoon a month of cottage cheese, and it is not every month. He gets his dog treats and mainly fruits/ and veggies. Priscilla is so right, once they have it something so small can trigger it. You have to be really careful. For me I would rather turn down those puppy eye’s than have him be sick in the hospital! |

I'm pretty sure it was bacon that set this off. I have already called our vet at home. I hope we can make it thru the weekend she has an apt on Monday. |

He didn't say anything at all about it. He said her food would be fine. I was kinda surprised. I will be glad to get back to our regular vet. She is sleeping now. The shivers have quieted. |
That’s too bad. I wish I had a can left, I would send you one. Poor thing, it is so hard seeing them sick and not eating. |
I will try the chicken in the water when she wakes again. I had thought about maybe chicken baby food. Just to get her stimulated. I'm not sure if I need to keep pushing her to eat or just let her rest for a few more days? |
You can try baby food, I will usually buy the organic baby food. Make sure the one you get doesn't have onion or garlic- some of them do. I always get the fruit or veggie ones.. sweet potato, peas, carrots, squash.. etc Maybe try when she wakes up and then wait till later on. |
How long did it take for peanut to start getting better? |
