Need Diet for protein losing enteropathy Hi, My yorkie Codyjames has just been diagnosed with Protein Losing Enteropathy. He had surgery Tuesday and they found his entire gastrointestinal tract affected. I am looking for a diet for this disease. He has had diarrhea since January. His original vet kept trying new diets and then I took him to another vet who said he had diseased intestines and suggested he be scoped. When we arrived at the hospital they did an ultra sound and found some fluid in his abdominal cavity. A very small amount and his albumin levels were normal so they did not think it was PLE. They opted for surgery and the biospy came back as Protein Losing Enteropathy. He is on a host of meds and still has diarrhea. I am feeding him boiled chicken and potatoes. He has lost about 2 pounds so far. Luckily is was a little overweight. I am hoping someone can point me in the right direction. Thank you, Joann |

Bumping :). |
There's a Royal Canin one too.... I would really talk to my vet. |
Welcome to Yorkie Talk. I'm sorry Codyjames has been diagnosed with PLE. The Yorkies I know who have PLE or suspected PLE have done best with a home cooked diet. I highly recommend consulting a certified vet nutritionist to have a special diet written for Codyjames. |
My Cookie was diagnosed with lymphangectasia in Dec. 2011. To my knowledge, Hill's KD is not a recommended food for it, but I could be wrong. I have a feeling it is probably too high fat. I believe that Royal Canin low fat is good...but it has been some time and I would not suggest you use that unless you speak with your vet. In speaking with the specialist at the time Cookie was diagnosed, I had asked if it would be better if I home cooked for her and he did say that home cooking would be ideal. I did a consult with a board certified vet nutritionist and she formulated a diet for Cookie that she is still on and thriving! Her recent blood work was awesome! Albumin 3.7 I swear it is the diet! I don't think it is a good idea to get a diet from another person....it really should be formulated for your individual pup and his needs. Here is the thread about Cookie: http://www.yorkietalk.com/forums/sic...ia-update.html To find a board certified vet nutritionist if your vet does not know one: American College of Veterinary Nutrition |
I think you would get more responses if this is in the Sick & Injured Forum...I just sent a message asking for it to be move. :) Welcome to YT. |

The only dog I know personally was on K/D but now I do remember her having another problem. (SORRY) She was also a very picky eater. The RC food I was talking about was the low fat. I'm so glad Cookie is still doing well! |
Thank you! I just want to thank everyone for their responses. I will speak to the vet at Oradell and ask her to get a diet for me. I am also looking for a good vet because Oradell animal hospital is to far for me to travel on a regular basis. I am in Mountainside so I am looking for someone within a 10 mile radius. Again, I serious appreciate all your input! Joann |

Good luck on your vet and food search! Please, keep us informed. |
If you want you can do a veterinary nutrition consult with a board certified member of the ACVN for help. I use dr remillard PetDiets - VNC putting pets' health first! |
I was advised by the specialist that the most important thing in treatment for these pups is diet. He also said that the challenge for many is when they are so sick that they no longer want to eat. I was very fortunate to have found out Cookie's problems early in the game...before she was really losing weight....but they can be turned around even if they have been sick for a while. A med that I have used for other conditions that can also be used for this is Mirtazapine. IF your pup is turning his nose up to food, ask the vet about this medication. Often it really does help ... it works as an anti emetic, anti nausea and also an appetite stimulant. |
I have a dog that has beginning renal disease. I think it is a bit related... any way my vet wanted me to use Hill's kd. I can get him to eat the kibble, but he will not eat the can. So.. I have done a lot of research on homecooking. It is hard for a sick dog but can be done. I invested in a gram scale and really follow the recipes. I think the most important advice is to be sure to get the diet (recipe) from a vet nutritionist.. follow and monitor closely. good luck!! |
I was speaking to a lady at my vet who's baby has this. Leaps and bounds were made on a home-made diet. Definitely consult a vet nutritionist by finding one with the links posted above. Good luck and welcome to YT! :) |
