Bladder surgery/Recovery ?'s I noticed on Fri night that Bodie was uncomfortable trying to pee. We're off to the vet to find he has several small bladder stones, too small to be felt by our vet but seen on ultrasound. He is scheduled for surgery on Mon. (They feel his penis is too small to try to pass the stones.) I have read several threads/links regarding stones and the good outcomes but haven't seen anything that mentions the day to day recovery. What can I expect once he comes home? I asked lots of questions regarding the actual surgery but when I'm trying to be a big girl and not cry it's hard to remember everything. I will have a talk with our vet again before surgery but I'm just wondering what the recovery it like from the patient's standpoint. Would you mind sharing? |
HI, my Bichons had this surgery twice. Both males. When you bring him home it will be rough. My guys both had bloody urine and not much bladder control the first night. I just put puppy pads down all over my living room and slept on the floor with them the first night. The next day they were much better! Just don't be too upset that first night! In about 2 days they were about back to normal. Just dont let the first night scare you! :) |
Oh and also, make sure you find out what kind of stones your little one has. They will have to send the stones off to a lab to find out, but please have this done! You can control the re-occurance of stones with diet, but what you feed will depend on what kind of stones he has. Good luck to you an your little guy! :) |
Sending prayers for Bodie. It is so scary when they have to have surgery. I can't imagine how worried you must be. The good thing is you caught it early and you were a good mom to get it taken care of right away. I am sure he will do fine through the surgery and be back in your arms before you know it. |

Oh gosh, Jan, just seeing this. Glad to hear the surgery went well. I have found that they do very well following surgery for stones. One of my fosters just had surgery recently and he was fine. My Teddy Bear had surgery in Feb. for bladder stones. He was found to have a liver shunt. Bodie is young...have they done bile acid testing on him? Did they say anything about the appearance of the stones. Don't want to worry you unnecessarily, but sometimes pups with LS will present with bladder stones. Prayers for a quick recovery. |
