New with a few questions This past wednesday my yorkie Mickey had trouble peeing. I took him to the vet and he was diagnosed with bladder stones. He required emergency surgery because his urethra was blocked. He was neutered in the process and they made a new hole for him to pee out of. I went to visit the vet today in regards to his blood test and bile acid test. The urinary bladder presented a 2.5 cm accumulation of sand. Small bladder calculi also appeared to be embedded in the prostate. The liver was mildly subnormal in size and coarse in architecture. Bile acid profile is recommended especially if the calculi are ammonium buirates. (which they were) There was no evidence of shunt noted. However, if severe bile acid elevation is present the further imaging of the portal vein, vena cava and intracostal approaches would be recommended. Bile acid test results Pre meal bile acids = 109.1 (High) Reference range = < 10.0 Post meal bile acids = 102.8 (High) Reference range = < 20.0 AST (SGOT) = 225 (High) Reference range = 15-66 ALT (SGPT) = 452 (High) Reference range = 12-118 Also has low T4 result indicating hypothyroidism. What am I dealing with here? This is the first dog I ever had and I'm just concerned with what I'm likely to be facing. He's never exhibited the symptoms of a liver shunt. He just turned 4 years old. Picture of him http://fbcdn-sphotos-h-a.akamaihd.ne...15981302_n.jpg Many thanks. I look forward to reading all the replies I get. |
Hi, And welcome to YT. I'm so sorry that your baby isn't feeling well. I can't help you, but I did want to post so this is bumped up for you so other members who have gone through the same thing that you are going through see your thread.(and post more helpful info for you) Hope your baby feels better soon. Looks like your doing the right things for him. PS he's a cutie! |
Many yorkies who have shunts do not have symptoms...and are often diagnosed after they develop bladder stones. It happened to one of mine recently....here is his thread that may help you in some way: http://www.yorkietalk.com/forums/sic...ver-shunt.html |
Your Mickey is adorable ! :) |
Welcome to YT! I'm sorry you found us under these circumstances. What did your vet say about the results you were given? What is her recommended course of treatment? My only comment on your lab work is that for a better understanding of the thyroid, you need an expanded panel. That is a blood test that looks at different T components. www.hemopet.org is very knowledgeable and recommend the "gold standard" testing. Also Dr Jean Dodds is very helpful if you want to send her an email with a brief medical history, including your lab results.. There is a lot of information on her website about thyroid problems. I hope that your boy heals quickly. |
