DHPPV reaction I had Zhoie's titers done a couple weeks ago and they came back with her numbers low for both her parvovirus and distemper. Late yesterday afternoon I took her in for her bloodwork for her dental on Monday morning and she also got the DHPPV shot. We live about 1 mile from the vet, when we got home she started heavy panting and scurrying room to room low to the ground, like in a panic. I rushed her back to the bet and she was having a reaction to the shot. They gave her a steroid shot and observed her for awhile. I was to watch her breathing and for swelling, if either occurred rush her to MD enmergency vet as my bet was closed. She finally settled down and stared to rest later in the evening. Zhoie will be 5 in January and this is the first time we've ever had to get a booster and can't imagine getting this one again. The bet said when she needs it again they will give her Benedryal prior to the shot. I was terrified for my girl, but Im thanking the good Lord she is ok. |
So glad things turned out okay for Zhoie and how scary! My Piccolo cannot have any vaccines due to cutaneous vasculitis. It has been 4 or 5 years since her last vaccine and honestly, we have not had any problems whatsoever. I do keep her away from dog parks and dogs I do not know. (The other two pups get vaccines) I have talked to my vet about this and had titers for her in the past. Piccolo's health to me is more important than the laws, so I did tell my vet that I was choosing to break the law on this one. I want to add that I am definitely not against vaccines, just against vaccines for Piccolo that could cause illness or death. |
Yes, I will have to think long and hard about giving it to her again. Zhoie doesn't go to dog parks either, nor do I let her walk on the floor at vet or any pet stores. It was so scary, never witnessed that before and hope to never see it again. |
I'm so sorry this happened to Zhoie. I know you were out of your mind with worry. The mommy instinct came out and you handled the situation quickly and got her help. Thank God she is doing well this morning. |
omg.. I know that scared you to death! I am glad it worked out and she is ok now. I have such mixed feelings about the different shots. Sam, my almost 10 year old has not had any other then rabies in several years. I didn't even do the titers this year and next year when rabies are due I hope to get a waver because he has the kidney disease. He is fine... but I will say I keep up on heartworm etc. That is a totaly different story! I have a rescue/adopted dog that did not have any shots for 5 years -- even rabies. The groomer is a friend and never asked for records. I didn't really mean to not have shots..but time just pasted. He was altered and the wonderful vet I had at the time thought he was Sam (my other dog) and never asked for record. I didn't know this until after all was said and done.. but I did think..isn't it on sam's records that you neutered him???makes you think lol Anyway.... I am happy zoie is ok. |
I know what you mean, now I will panic over all shots:( |
Wow I am sorry she went through that. It is scary when they have a reaction. One of my older cats had a reaction and I am not going to give them anymore. They are indoor and the younger ones are going to still get them. I don't want to kill my kitty over a shot. |
Glad she's okay... scary! |
I'm so glad that your beautiful Zhoie is okay. I would have been so terrified, too. My rainbow bridge baby, Ashley, had an enlarged heart. Her doctor stopped all shots at the age of ten, and she lived seven more years. We didn't go to dog parks, but we walked at least a couple of miles each day. I just had Katie titered, and her blood levels came back good. She is four years old. Please give your precious baby some extra kisses from me. |
Thank you all for your well wishes and I'll give Zhoie lots of kisses:D We are leaving g in the morning to travel to NCSU for her dental on Monday, now we just got to make it through that ok. Prayers for my girl. |
Praying for Zhoie to have a safe dental and clean teeth! |
I wouldn't give it again and I wouldn't do any more titers. I hope everything goes well for her! |
How scary! So glad she's ok! |

My ZoE always gets a dose of meds prior to her shots. ZoE's breeder's vet records, which were faxed to our vet, stated that both the dame & sire were reactive to shots, so our vet was cautious with her right off the bat. The only time she had any kind of reaction was with her first rabies shot. It made her very tired for a day & she had a nasty lump on the back of her shoulders for a few weeks, that got smaller & smaller until it eventually went away |
So happy that your beautiful Zhoie is alright |
Very scary! I am relieved to hear Zhoie is okay. Max is due for his DHPPV and he is almost 5. Now I am really nervous. Keeping Zhoie in my prayers for a safe dental. |
I'm curious...is the DHPPV different from the DHPP? What's the V part for? I've only known DHPP & DHLPP. |
Glad to hear Zhoie is doing ok now. Prayers for her dental to go well. My Bentley hasn't been feeling well for a few weeks...I know how much we worry about them. |

Guide to Common Dog Vaccines - DHPPV, DA2PPV, DHLPPV, -C |
Our Ebon (corgi type dog) just had shots yesterday while she was in for stomach distress. OH took her in so not certain exactly what she got but I know one of them was the distemper and another was the rabies. (She was due so they did the whole lot then and there.) She's been kind of down and not herself today but not certain if it's from the injections or the stomach trouble. I don't want to get Jenna any more shots because she reacted badly to the dental one they were using there a few years ago and she also has history of cutaneous vasculitis. Is there a waiver that can be arranged for her so she doesn't have to risk a reaction or take any further shots? I would've been frantic had anything like that happened to any of my animals. Good on you for getting it sorted right away and that Zhoie is okay. :) |

I had Katie vaccinated for rabies last week, and my vet mentioned that I should wait a month for her booster shot, which is what i wanted anyway. When I asked him about titering, he said he preferred titering. The vet tech told me that some places like groomers or boarding facilities might not accept titering instead of the boosters, but I wasn't worried about that. A titer can be done for rabies, but the blood would have to be sent to California. My guess is that it would be sent to Hemopet. Katie did fine with the rabies shot, and I suppose she'd do fine with the booster shot, but I preferred to test her immunity in her blood. Poor Katie in the last few weeks at the vet had her blood drawn twice, once testing her for heart worm a few weeks before and then for the titer and also a rabies shot. She is afraid of very little, but she shook when we walked in. Our vet has such a nice way of addressing her, and he soon made Katie relax. |
I am SO glad Zhoie is ok. I am not sure how I feel about shots with Taycie, the last thing she needs is something else for her little body to put up with. I am seriously thinking of titering and skipping shots. |
Vaccine reactions are so scary! Jackson reacted very badly to lepto as a pup. I won't be bothering with vaccines anymore except rabies (since its required by law and he hasn't had a reaction to that one). But I'm not worried at all. Prob won't waste my money on titers either. He is almost 5 and has not had DHPP since he was 1. |
Agree with brit regarding titers. My vets haven't believed in titers. I've opted to vaccinate for rabies. My 12 year olds had it this year. I didn't continue dhpp for them. I did get it for the younger dogs. I've luckily not had anyone have a reaction to anything but if I did, I don't think I would continue. My state doesn't have a medical waiver for rabies and will quarantine a dog in the shelter for a bite even if the vet gets involved. It's ridiculous since bats are the most likely carriers of rabies in my area and bats carry the rabies strain that is most transmittable to humans. But they still will quarantine any dog not up to date on rabies even when that dog has had a lifelong vaccination history. My vet told me about a dog with a severe anxiety disorder that had to be quarantined and they did not allow her to quarantine in her home. Poor thing had to go to a shelter. If the dog has a rabies tag that's current it can be quarantined at home. It scares me but I don't think I'll do rabies in 15 year olds if they live that long. |
Glad Zhoie is much better what a scary thing to go through. Two weeks ago we had a bordatella done on our Kinder , she got so sick in the middle of the night. She threw up all over, poor baby. I called our vet and he said next time they will give her something.I am scared to have her get this again so I will have to talk to our vet again. Anyways glad your baby is doing well and hopefully it doesn't happen again. Susan |
