Throwing up...
 

I know you guys are going to tell me to take Chester to the vet on this one, which I definately am going to do, but I need an opinion on if you think we can hold out until the morning when the real vet is in so we can avoid the costs of the emergency vet (which, I will still take him to if he needs to go). Here is what happened:

Chester is 14 weeks old and extremely healthy. About 3 1/2 hours ago, he got one of those Hartz fuzzy catnip mice and ate about half of it (the inside contents and part of the outer fur) before I found it and took it away (I know, I already feel guilty enough). First off, I called the emergency clinic to find out if these are toxic and they wouldn't tell me, they just said bring him in for xrays. Well, now he's been throwing up about every 5-10 minutes for the past 45 min. His throwing up is happening farther apart now then they were initially, but he is only throwing up stomach acid at this point. He had a good solid bowel movement about 2-3 hours ago. Now what I need to know is 1) have any of you ever experienced anything like this ie: puppy eating something and then getting sick for a while 2) Does anyone have any idea if these are toxic to dogs? I've heard of cats eating them and being fine.
3) In your experience, can we hold out until the morning when the regular vet clinic is open if I watch him carefully?

I gave him some nutrical already. He is still fully alert, but is not interested in food or water (which is to be expected, I'm sure)

I would check with a vet, but haven't found it listed as toxic to dogs anywhere but will keep looking....do you know the brand?

Never experienced it but this is what I found...

The primary active compound is catnip, nepetalactone, is chemically similar to hallucinogens. Catnip is not toxic to pets. http://www.citycats.biz/catnip.htm

I really can't tell you one way or the other however I can share with you the experiences I have had with dogs and catnip filled toys.
My dogs, I have 5, will destroy an cat nip filled mouse in short order. Even my toy poodle will rag and gum one to death. The G.S will eat them cloth and all.
I don't give them to the dogs they just find them laying around where the cats have left them and gooble gooble..!!!
None have even sustained any ill effects although the cloth covering of the catnip mouse can't do their digestive tracts any good.
I just have never seen an ill effect of the cat nip on my dogs but that doesn't mean it couldn't upset a tummy or two.
Maybe someone on the board will have better information for you.

This was posted just in regards to cats...but could it be the pup ingested too much? Either way, that young it is easy for them to get dehydrated very fast. Hope all goes well.

The brand is Hartz. It's the little colorful fuzzy mice... If he is impacted, should I watch for his next stool? And if he does have a blockage, would he be okay until the morning when the clinic opens at 7:30? I am freaking out right now... It's been about 20 minutes since he last threw up. Right now he's sleeping but will still lift his head and look at me if I talk to him so he is alert.

I realize that and posted only what I was able to find but it did say it wasn't toxic to pets so I was asuming pets in general. Did you find anything different? The second portion was from a dog forum and that's all they said on it.

Keep an eye on Chester. Are you able to give him any liquids? Is there another vet clinic you could call? What about your normal vet. Do they have an emergency number listed on their answering machine or answering service?

I was able to give him half a syringe of water and he took it readily. I don't want to give him so much at a time that he throws up again. So far he still hasn't thrown up again and it's been about 30 minutes. I will still stay up with him the rest of the night, but I'm feeling a little more positive that we can make it until the vet opens in the morning.

And unfortunately, there is only one emergency clinic in this town. I was searching for an emergency number listed at any of the vets around here and haven't found one as of yet. Since he seems to be doing better, I might just wait and see...

When I had to take Gracie in a couple of weeks ago, I called my regular vet and got the answering machine with his emergency numbers on it. Following Sunday, I had to call again, but I called my other vet (I have 3) and his answering service had him call me within 5 minutes. Just a thought that maybe you could call your regular vet.

Chester is back to his normal self. He didn't throw up anymore and he just got finished eating, drinking and pooping. Now he's chasing the cats. I will probably still call the vet just to see if they think they need to see him just in case. Boy was that a scary night! Anyway, so far it looks like Chester is fine. Thank you for all of the replies and info!

I'm so glad he is better. It is so scary when that happens. I had Cali at my elderly parents yesterday and watched her like a hawk, I turned my back for 2 seconds and she was looking at something on the bedroom floor , i looked down and it was a crushed pill. I screamed for my mom to come in and asked what type a pill it was and she said it was an Ativan to help her sleep. It looked like most of the pill was there and Cali didn't have any powder residue nor was the crushed pill wet so I felt pretty confident that she hadn't got any but i watched her all night.

Oh, thank goodness! I came back this morning just to find this! :D
