Yorkie with constipation Dear All, Nero, my Yorkie is 14 months and has been with me for 3 months. He is 4 pounds or 1.8Kg in weight. While at the breeder, he ate food for a lactating mum and had diaorhea and vomitting. I took him to the vet and he had an antinausea injection and Royal Canine food for sensitive dogs. He is now very constipated and his poo got stuck in his bum this afternoon. I am very worried. I have read about giving him some olive oil with his food (is this recommended?) Please help as as I am desperate. Lil |
I'm not sure about olive oil. However I do know a small amount of pure canned pumpkin has worked for my girls. Mine will eat it right off a spoon. You might give it a try. |
Give his rear end a warm bath |
Poor Nero. I think the canned pumpkin would be good to try. You can also try running his rear end under warm water. It relaxes the muscles and might stimulate him to be able to poop. I hope Nero feels better soon. |
Sometimes a good walk works for my girls too. :) |

Great advice above. I would skip the olive oil. Plain pumpkin (no spices), warm rear end wash, walking. Max was terribly constipated once and these things helped him. Talk to your vet this week about the effect of the diet on him. Hope your boy can get some relief soon. Welcome to Yorkie Talk. |
Thanks so much to all of you generous folk who responded to my cry for help. I spoke to my breeder who recommended that I give him some "wet food" as he only eats dry kibble with the occassional chicken breast pieces. I did this and it seemed to work the trick! Inadvertently, I washed his rear with warm water - to help ease the stuck poo and then took him for walks yesterday... so all together, he seemed a bit better but I will have to see if I can get a can of pumpkin for emergencies. I live in London and do not recall seeing canned pumpkin in the stores - if anyone has a brand name - please share with me so I can get this too. Many thanks all from Lil and Nero!!:aimeeyork:) |
I'm happy to hear Nero is feeling better. :) |
Happy to hear Nero is doing better. For future troubles, I would recommend all that was suggested AND maybe try a bit of mineral oil. Just a bit on the food and even rub a bit on the bum. |
