Clavamox for uti I was wondering if anyone has experience with clavamox for a uti. She was at the emergency vet last night due to blood in urine and they gave me a 62.5 mg pill to give her every 12 hours. She's only three pounds and I've never been able to give her a whole pill without having to make it into a smaller dose for her. I called back and they said I could give half the pill which I still felt was too much. I looked up the dosing and it says 6.25 mg a pound I also noticed they didn't have her weight down. I gave her half the pill with a small meal and an hour later she started with loud stomach gurgles which usually happens before a bloody diarrhea flare up. I then gave her tylan which they said would be safe to continue to give. She gets tylan twice a day to prevent ibd flare ups and this is also an antibiotic. I also give dr beckers pro biotics two to three hours after antibiotics. At this point I feel like it may be a bad idea to give her two antibiotics at once. I called both her vets but they are both going to call me back since they are with clients. Does 62.5 mg sound like a lot for a three pound yorkie to anyone else? |
Extreme overdose. I would not give it whole until you speak with your vet. |
I agree give her nothing until you talk to your vet. I a glad you questioned the dosage it could have been very bad. |
The vet called back and said I can give 1/2 to 1/4 twice a day. So I gave her 1/4 this time. Her belly started gurgling but I gave her tylan (which she takes twice a day long term) and it seemed to help calm down her belly. I just still feel like 1/2 is a lot for a three pound dog. Three pound dog should get 18.75 mg and 1/2 of the pill is about 31.25 mg. I think I just stress too much over this stuff. Just don't want to make things worse. I'm wondering if it was ok to do the 1/4 since I gave her 1/2 last night. Maybe I should have waited 24 hours before next dose. |
I would continue the 1/4. That is the dose my vet would have given. Not sure why they let an owner choose between 1/2 and 1/4. Very odd. |
I am giving Jess .6 liquid clavamox after her spay. Did the same with her uti a few months ago.. |
I know with my Luci, when I first got her as a rehome, and she had her spay and dental, and the Clavamox they gave her was a liquid. Luci weighs just almost 3 pounds. Do you think maybe they could give you the liquid form of this med? |
Pixie got a uti after her spay and was put on liquid clavamox. She was about 4 lbs. |
I'm not sure about the liquid I will have to ask. I'm still seeing a little blood and she's still having an urgency to urinate but not as bad as before. I'm a little worried about how upset her belly is getting from the clavamox. I asked the vet about it and he said we may need to just ride it out. The emergency vet gave enough for 7 days. Is this the usual length I forgot to ask her vet. I swear they are going to block my number lol. |
I think Jess was on for 10. The liquid smells like banana so its easier to give and I can put it right on her food. Or I inject in watermelon, her favorite |
I think it would be easier to get the liquid form. Our vet prescribed the liquid when our Kinder had an uti and it cleared her up fast. Also it was easy to give and she liked the liquid better than pills. Hope your baby gets better soon. Susan |
Does anyone know how long it takes before she starts to return to normal and no more blood. The frequency has seemed to slow down and her belly is feeling a little better but still seeing a little blood. She's been on clavamox since Sunday night at about 11pm. |
