I hurt my baby! Hi everyone! Well it happened...I gave Princess Sophie a bath this morning and when I was trimming her toe nails, I cut one too short. I didn't even realize it until I started seeing blood all over me! Now, my bird (Cali) flew to rest on my head earlier in the morning and she is mad because I'm not giving her enough attention so she bit me several times on my right hand, drawing blood. At first, when trimming Sophie's nails, I thought I was still bleeding from Cali's bites but then realized I had hurt Sophie. I feel so terrible, I cried! I was smart enough to go get the styptic powder and use it to stop the bleeding so she won't bleed to death but it looks like she lost quite a bit of blood. There is one more nail to trim and I don't know if I can do it now. I don't want her to be afraid but I think she's gonna be afraid now, no matter what I do. I am a bad mommy!!!!:cry::cry: |
Diane I know you are a good mommy so get that thought out of your head. I have had vet techs that are trained to cut nails cut the quick a few times so accidents do happen. Can you just cut the tip off on the last one if she will let you? I know you feel terrible but this happens quite a bit. Good Grief!!! You have had an eventful morning already with the bird and Princess Sophie. |
NO, you're a good mommy! Like you, I made Tuffy bleed once so I put off trimming for too long & then when it was time, he of course acted like I was killing him! She'll be fine, just try to take a little less off more often. |
All LYorkie owners that cut their dogs nails need to have that special powder on hand in case of bleeding. It happens so often, my groomer did it to my dog once. You did the right thing and your dog is fine. |
Don't beat yourself up. I did that twice to my yorkie Zach. I hate to say it but now I'm a chicken and I have him groomed professionally along with my other dogs. |
Thank you all for your kind words! I very much appreciate it!! You know, my plan all along was to trim them more often, just taking off the very tips but I noticed that the last time I took Sophie to the groomer, they didn't trim her nails. Well...that's really my fault because I asked her to only trim her ear tips, feet and private areas and I didn't realize, when I got her home, that her nails hadn't been trimmed. By the time I did notice, they were really longer than I wanted them and that's why I cut too short. I know better now and hopefully this won't ever happen again. I know that when I bathe her, I have to remember to trim just the tips of her nails and that will be ok. Oh my goodness, this has really taken a lot out of me, and Princess Sophie as she is asleep next to me, here on the sofa. Thank heavens and thank you all again!! I would be lost without you!! |
so glad she is ok and your ok. :) ur a good mommy we all have accidents that happens. |
You are a very good mommy for keeping her nails trimmed and for having styptic powder. Everyone who trims nails hits a quick at least once. I understand feeling bad when it comes to these little ones. I hate when I make mien yelp accidentally. |
Don't feel bad, Diane.....I have done it twice! I too was scared of trying to clip them again. I waited for a long time and them just bit the bullet and trimmed the tips a few at a time. I didn't want Teeka to feel my stress, so I only did a couple and then took a break! Your are an excellent Mom to Sophie! |
I am so afraid to cut Galen's nails even though I cut all the cats nails. I don't know why |
You are a great mommy! You trim her nails and that is hard to do. Teri - I won't do it. I'll trim Shelby's but I won't do Mandie's. It freaks me out because they are black and I can't see the quick. I always swing her by my vet's office to clip them when they need it. lol I'm a big ole chicken, Diane. You are so brave! :) |
The first fime I cut Huey's nails, i did the same thing. This is why I don't cut his nails. I just take him 2 or 3 times a month to the groomer and get them trimmed. In fact, I have them use the dremel. It makes them smoother and less chance of accidents. Everyone has done it! No worries. |
Bless your heart. You know that accidents happen and you knew exactly what to do when you realized her nail was cut too short. You are always one of the first to post when someone has a question or is hurting. You are an AWESOME mommy! Kiss Sophie for Jasper and me. (((Hugs))) :) |
Unfortunately, I have cut the quick, too, and I always have stupid powder on hand. It takes da lot longer, but I cut each nail in three steps. By trimming just a little each time, I am able to do it without cutting the quick. The blood vessel pulls back with each cut, and I do just a short little cut. |
Thank you everyone! I really feel much better with all your encouragement! I will continue to trim her nails after baths but I will be more careful and hopefully this will never happen again. Bless you all for your kindness toward this old gal! I love you all!! |
