Yorkie licking air
 
Charlie is a 5 year old yorkie who has been licking in the air for the past few days. Moreso after eating and she has been a bit hesitant when eating.

Has anyone else had a yorkie exhibit these symptoms and what was the problem?

Dogs typically lick air due to nausea. Are you feeding a new food?

Thank you for the reply.

I am not feeding her new food. She is on a special diet due to complicated urinary tract infection. It is the Royal Canin SO 14.

Give the vet a call and let them know. I just switched my dog, Cooper to the same food. He seems to love it. The licking is probably not such a big deal, but you may want to get it checked out.

Is she on any medication ? if yes then it could be the meds giving her a bit of an upset tummy. Also a UTI can cause nausea. Indigestion can also cause air licking.
Has your baby been checked for stones ?

Why Does My Dog Compulsively Lick The Air?

This can be a form of seizure and other things. A vet needs to check her to be sure. Any sudden change in behavior or bizarre behavior is one of the only ways a dog can "tell" us that something is wrong with them and they need help.

Video it if you can and take that baby to the vet.

I've had my Yorkie "Mister" for five months now. He "licked the air" on the ride home and I took this to be a sign of stress. But I've noticed he's kept doing it, even after we settle down on the couch, to watch tv, just before going to bed. I just think of it as his way of winding down...

My mother's dog will lick the air and spin around in a circle when she is constipated or if her anal glands are full.

I agree, it could be a sign of nausea and/or stress. Perhaps the vet could give an anti nausea med like Cerenia until she is over the infection and eating properly again? Hope she gets well soon.

One of Libby's symptoms when she got so sick was licking the air. I do believe it was that she felt nauseated.

Mimi did this too when her anal glands were bothering her. Vet said dogs lick the air when they're nauseated & gave us some pepcid. IDk what that (licking the air) has to do w/her anal glands, but maybe they do that when something is bothering them & causes stress.

It's odd behavior but I'm glad to know there are other Yorkies doing this too. Mister doesn't seem nauseated...and typically, this licking of the air thing happens when he sits on my lap, or beside me, or sometimes when I'm in the kitchen and he's lying on a rug watching me putz around. I've not been able to figure it out...and wondered if he'd just developed some sort of habit, like a baby sucking his thumb.
