Kennel cough.....what should I do now?Help! Sunday my precious baby (she's 7 years old)started feeling pretty congested. She had runny nose and watery eyes . So yesterday morning the vet put her on antibiotic of course.....Then once we got home she started coughing ( dry hacking cough, retching and gagging sound)and in the afternoon i called the vet and he said she could have kennel cough and if she was still coughing through the night he will likely have to prescribe a different antibiotic in the morning. I could hear her coughing through the night, poor thing!:( The sad thing is she was just recovering from a 30 days round of steroids(she stopped less than a month ago)and now the antibiotic? I've read that sometimes kennel cough has to run its course and it will go away on its own and also that there are many natural remedies( herbal/homeopathy) available to cure it. What's your input on this? Has anyone had a good response without antibiotics? I also thought about giving her some echinacea to strengthen her immune system and help her recover faster. Should I? Is it safe for dogs? Please I need advice! Thank you in advance. |
I just wanted to say that i'm so sorry for your precious baby and she'll be in our thoughts. I have no experience with kennel cough or antibiotics :( Someone else must be able to help you out :) |
I am so sorry that your little one is going through this. We had kennel cough here last year with all three pups. It was so sad to hear them coughing and carrying on. We did go to the vet and he gave them an antibiotic, to try and keep any secondary infections away. No advice, except to stay in contact with your vet, etc. Hopefully someone else can give some more or better advice! |
Sorry your baby is ill. Sometimes, 5-10 minutes in a steamed up bathroom will help ease the cough about 2-3 times a day... With her being older, I'd go with the antibiotics, especially after coming off the steroids. Maybe the vet can give her a mild cough suppressant, or something to ease her cough and soothe her throat. Praying your girl gets better soon! |
I have had such a difficult experience with kennel cough. Mine had it for a solid 3 months. It was absolutely horrific. He coughed so frequently and the coughing fit always ended in a gagging sound. I was worried sick thinking it could be all sorts of really bad illnesses like collapsed trachea. Turns out it was just kennel cough because he eventually did get over it, but it took him way longer than normal. He was 9 weeks old when he got it. The first set of antibiotics sucked. He threw up from it repeatedly. He was then on different antibiotics and I'm not sure if they helped much. I ended up giving him back to my breeder to handle because his coughing was seriously so severe. She had him on a couple rounds of antibiotics. Its only to stop pneumonia from happening, and it certainly didn't cure him faster. All I can say is to not worry because if you are certain this is kennel cough I would get a round of antibiotics and just ride it out. I wasn't overly worried about the antibiotics, I was more worried about the possibility of pneumonia. Good luck, this will pass! |
Some vets do perscribe a cough supressant, some will tell you to use an OTC supressant (do NOT do this without asking your vet first,if it is ok,what and how much). The antibiotics are to help keep pnuemonia at bay. Any dog that contracts pnuemonia can become gravely ill very quickly. |
When my lab had kennel cough, he went on antibiotics and was better after about 10-14 days. Haven't had it with Huey, but he stays vaccinated against it (the lab wasn't). |
When my little ones caught kennel cough, the ve told me to use children's tixylix cough meds and it worked . He also gave me antibiotics. |
The vet gave her antibiotic for the congestion on her chest and not the kennel cough though. She only coughs most at night but she's really congested though. The vet told me to give her some children Benadryl for the cough. Does it work? I would think a cough syrup would be more ideal. Some people use Robitussin DM, does it work? Is it safe? |
Daisy had kennel cough when I got her and she was put on an antibiotic and the vet had me give her robitussin. She improved within a couple of days. Sending prayers for your little one. |
Update: Hailey seems to be doing a lot better. She's still a little bit congested but it's not as bad as it was 4-5 days ago. The cough improved after a couple of days( no more coughing at night) but she has a few occasional coughing spells mostly is she gets excited and such. She's still on antibiotics until next week( why 14 days I don't know) but I hope she gets back to being healthy soon.....she's been through so much in the past months. Thank you again. |
Advice needed!Diarrhea while on last day of antibiotic? Now what? Well, Hailey now has some diarrhea......she's already eating a bland diet of chicken and rice, what should I give her to help her? Also, today for dinner is her last dose of antibiotic......should I give it to her anyway? It's Sunday and I can't call the vet until tomorrow! :( |
The antibiotic she's taking is Metronidazole which I believe is also given to treat diarrhea (but that's not why she was on it). |
hope hailey feels better soon |
