Spinal Fracture in my 3 month old Yorkie :( My baby girl Daisy has a spinal fracture from what the doctor is telling us. She was attacked by a German Shepard and has a puncture wound on her back that has broken the bone and now her spinal cord has some bone fragments in it. We have taken her to a specialist and she is staying at the hospital until Monday. The doctor has given us a 1% chance that she will ever walk again. She is also incontinent of both bowel and bladder. Looks like we will be getting her a wheelchair in a few months after the fracture heals. The vets we talked to seem like they want us to put her to sleep, but that's not an option for us. She is in no pain and she is the same feisty little girl she's always been. She had no feeling at all in her left leg and some deep pain response in her right leg. Over the past few days she's gotten some feeling in two toes on her left back paw. The vet was happy that she's progressing, but still not hopeful about her walking. They made her a splint and she will come home in it and have to be crate confined for about three months. |
I am truly sorry to hear your story. Keeping all of you in my prayers! |
What a tragic, tragic event for a 12 week old puppy to have to deal with...........my heart breaks........... |
Oh no...this is just awful...poor baby! |
Has the owner of the other dog that did this stepping up for at least some of the medical bills? |
My thoughts and prayers are with you and your baby! |
OMG, that poor, poor baby. But, it sounds like she may be the miracle! I am so sorry that you all are having to go through this, especially your baby. |
This is so very sad. I'm so sorry your baby was so badly injured. It's obvious how much you love Daisy and how much you will do to give her a full life. |
Oh, my heart is breaking for you and your sweet baby. I believe miracles do happened! We took Zhoie to the University of North Carolina Vet School for AAI. The surgeons that did her spinal surgery are amazing and Zhoie has fully recovered from a major surgery. To add a word of encouraement, we were told they do several surgeries a a week for these little ones that have had serious spinal injuries with a high success rate. Is it possible for your to take her to a vet school? They have the latest equipment and the highest level of skills for teaching, it's simply astounding. Sending prayers for your baby girl. |
What a terrible, tragic thing to have happen! :( She is still so young that she will adapt quickly, though, and never remember life without the wheelchair. It will be normal, everyday gettin' around for her. She is lucky and blessed to have such a caring, loving furever family who is taking such good care of her. I agree with yorkiemom1, the owner of the attacking dog needs to man up for some of these bills. Many homeowner insurance policies cover dog bites, if it is not specifically excluded under liability. I would check with that owner anyway. Please keep us updated on Daisy's progress. I pray that she continues to improve and adapt and that her puncture wounds heal without incident. Photos when she is ready and you are able, please! :D |
I am so sorry! As an owner of a paraplegic dog, I can tell you that inability to walk is not that hard on a dog, they adapt very well! It was a learning curve for us but now that we are able to express her bladder and bowels, we are all just as happy as before! And don't give up hope completely - many dogs are able to "spinal walk" even if they can't feel or control it. Don't give up hope and you can always pm me if you want someone to talk to. I will keep you all in my prayers!! |
What a tragic accident. I'm praying for your little Daisy and her family. |
I am so sorry! What a tragic thing to happen! Prayers for Daisy! I hope you found the owner of the dog that injured her! |
I am so sorry to hear about Daisy. One so young. Has the other dogs owners stepped up to help? |
What a terrible accident! I will be praying for your baby... I hope the owner of the other dog is helping out. Please keep us posted |

What a tragic accident! I am going to pray for a miracle for your sweet baby. |
The owner of the dog is our neighbor and he hasn't volunteered to help with anything. When my husband texted him to tell him how much we've already spent he replied, "I wish I knew what to say." So, that means sorry, but you're out of luck. The bills are outrageous so far, and will only add on as time goes on. But, we aren't focused on that right now, just getting her home to us. She is actually at a vet school in Oklahoma. It's the OSU vet teaching hospital. They seem to be very knowledgable there. |
IM so sorry, that is horrible |

Praying for your baby to have a speedy recovery. Susan |
I am so sorry to hear this... Have you contacted the police about this incident? I hope your neighbor plans on contributing to the vet bills! |
Just checking on your baby. Hope everything is better and praying for a miracle! |
She gets to come home tomorrow morning. We are excited to get to bring her home! We will have to express her bladder for her, and she will be in diapers since she is incontinent. I am an RN, so I have some experience with spinal fractures and all the goes along with it, so I hope we can give her good care. The vet did call this morning to tell us that she looked like she has some movement in her left leg, which is the leg that had no feeling or movement at all, so that seems to be a huge change. She is coming home in a splint to protect her back and will wear it for about 3 months. The neighbor has not volunteered to help with any bills or anything. I think that's a lost cause. |

I think where you are wrong is that they(neighbors) do not need to volunteer. You need to demand it. It's their obligation. |
I am thrilled with your baby's progress!!! I am also thrilled you are an RN and will have a jump on the medical issues you have to watch for....this is going to be such a massive amount of information and knowledge you already xre in tune to, so there is a very small "learning curve" facing you with the care this baby needs! I am really excited right along with you!!! I am happy for the return of some movement in that hind leg too....I have heard of research programs....it just in the animal research stages....where they inject nerve cells into the spinal cord and the cells are actually regenerating damaged nerves in the spine, so they are very hopeful this research is going to enable patients with paralysis, to regain use of limbs! Down the road, since your baby has been treated at an excellent vet school, they may be aware of this research....I have no idea if this would be an option for you to investigate....it would probably be very expensive, but since it is research trials, it may be offered for free....being an RN, you will be able to investigate this avenue easily! |

Sending our love and prayers to your baby. Your neighbor sounds like a real prince. I may have missed one of your posts but I have to ask. How did your puppy get near a German Sheppard? I get nervous when my small dogs play with my basset hounds. I know that German Sheppards are high strung dogs. Our basset hounds are the most loving dogs in the world and I still worry. |
So sorry to hear about what your puppy & you are going through. I have heard lots of good things about the OSU Vet School. Hopefully they can help a lot & prayer works great too. Glad to hear there is some improvement and you get to bring her home! |
