Giardia??? Layla has been acting weird this morning, just not herself. She wanted to be with me so I brought her into the living room and she was laying down on the shag area rug. All of sudden she started running away and I saw a big patch of diarrhea on the rug. There's blood in it. DH called the vet and she said there have been 10 cases of giardia come in, so she wanted a sample. Scott just took it. Poor Layla. She is still wearing a cone and on eye drops for her eye infection. Now this??? I hope it is easy to treat. I am also trying to now clean poop and blood out of a shag carpet. |
Bless her heart! Praying for her to be ok! |
After doing more research I don't think it could be giardia... she does not go outside very often, and has only been in our yard which is fenced and only has poop from the our other two dogs. I went out to look at the whole yard and there is no bloody diarrhea from the other dogs. They are fine. Layla hasn't been around any other animals at all, or been in contact with any other animal feces, so I don't think she could have been in contact with giardia. I bet it's colitis. I guess we'll find out when we get the test results back, which should be soon! |
I bet it is colitis. She has been through a lot lately. Hopefully it is nothing much and she will be back to normal soon. :) |
Saying prayers for Layla....hope everything is ok. |
Well the giardia test came back negative. She was going to do some smear test next but DH didn't remember what she said (he was on the phone with her). She had an emergency come in so wouldn't have results for a few hours. Layla seems to be doing okay though. She hasn't had any more diarrhea and she has been drinking water, and is currently having a nap. |
Layla Poor baby, she does not need this! Hope she gets better soon. So glad it is not giardia. |
The vet never did call us back. Layla's poops have been solid with no blood ever since. |
Okay so the vet just called and said they looked at her smear again and there are cysts that could mean giardia and even though the giardia test came up negative, she wants to treat her for giardia anyway. Does this sound normal? She also said I could treat the other dogs even though they have no symptoms. She said Layla might just be a carrier and isn't showing symptoms anymore but she could still have it. She has seen enough dogs with giardia lately that she wants to treat it before it gets worse. I just don't know what to do! |
I am so sorry you now have this uncertainty for giardia and that the vet wants to treat poor Layla (and the other dogs!) anyway. It did not seem certain that the cysts were definitely indicative of giardia. Is it possible the vet could find out for sure? I am no help as I do not know of this disease, and I am sure others will be able to help you from experience, but I do not like treating if the diagnosis is not certain. (Unless it is a life or death situation where delay could be a disaster) Good luck and I hope that she is in fact well and needs no further treatment. |
I don't know enough about giardia either. If it can only be contracted from contact with infected fecal matter, then she CAN'T have it. There's no way. She's not ever with other dogs, she is rarely outside (we still had snow last week, and she was out this weekend but we had cleaned up all the poop from the other dogs first and they are not infected) Plus, if it was giardia, would it not be getting worse? She did have bloody diarrhea one day. But since then, she has had solid poops with no blood at all. It almost seems like it was just something irritating her digestive system, maybe something she ate, but it got better right away. It just doesn't seem to add up to me. I don't know what to do. |
Giardia If it were me I would go back to the vet with the arguments you have just noted. The Vet has to better justify the need for treating all your dogs, not just throw it out there with apparently minimal proof of the disease. I hope someone with more expertise will help you here. |
It comes in handy to have a friend at the vet college. I told her what the vet told me and she talked to the people in medicine, who told her giardia is very uncommon - in fact, rare - and with Layla's lifestyle it would be extremely unlikely. There a hundreds of other things that could cause bloody diarrhea. We have to take Layla to the vet college on Thursday for a checkup on her eye, so we will try to make a medicine appointment at the same time for a second opinion on another sample. We will not be picking up the prescription for now. |
So happy to hear that Layla is doing well! :) |
Layla. Great idea to ask at the Vet college about the giardia first. Hope all is well with her eye. |
