Crystals in Urine?? Investigate or leave it? Believe me I'm not looking for a problem but I have a situation. Deuce does not appear to be an any distress. I have said the past couple of months that I thought Deuce was peeing quite a bit. Not all of a sudden but noticeable. Sometimes after I take him for a walk outside and he pees then marks his way up the block he will then come in the house and go downstairs and pee on his pad. Just seems like alot of pee for a little guy. He can sleep all night without having to pee and sit in the window for hours waiting for the mailman without a pee break. Well I thought I would just check for a UTI and we took a sample to the Vet for testing. The vet called and said the urine was healthy but there were some crystals in the urine and suggested we bring in another sample since the container may have had something in it. Well we brought in another sample and there were some present again. The Vet's take on it was that maybe it is something and he might have a Bladder stone. She wants to check with Ultra Sound. Anyone hear of this before? Thanks for your help. |
I did a little reading about struvite crystals, and it appears that they are not unusual with a UTI. I know your vet said that he didn't have a urinary tract infection, but I read that they don't always show up on tests. This article that I linked below might be helpful to read. I hope you find out what is causing his crystals, and I hope Deuce gets better soon. Canine Kidney Stone and Bladder Stone Prevention - Whole Dog Journal Article "The importance of testing It’s important to know that urinalysis can’t always detect a bladder infection; urinalysis may appear normal as frequently as 20 percent of the time when a urinary tract infection is present. For this reason, if your dog shows possible signs of infection, you need to request a “urinary culture and sensitivity test.”This will verify the diagnosis (in some cases the problem is something other than an infection) and, if it is an infection, it will reveal which antibiotic will be most effective for treatment." |
I agree - crystals can indicate a UTI. I'd talk this over with your vet and see if treating for a UTI will help. Like treat and test again for crystals...then go from there? |
This should be taken very seriously. Assuming they are struvites, the urine should be taken by cystocentesis and sent for culture immediately. If the vet did not offer a culture, I'd find a new one. If this is not treated quickly, they can come together and form a stone. |
Guinness had the same thing and after running all the test come to find it was the certain flavor of food he was eating at the time, I switch up flavors of the same brand. I would test if it were me but at least know that it could be something that simple :) |
This absolutely needs to be taken seriously! I agree with Ellie Mae that a culture should be done. I also would do the ultrasound to be sure there are no stones. Good luck...please keep us posted! |
Daisy has had crystals twice and I take it very serious she has had the ultra sound to make sure that there were no bladder stones. The vet told me that once they produce crystals they are more likely to do it again. Daisy is on royal canine So and I also give her distilled spring water. She has not had a had a problem with crystals in a yr.. |
My Gina had this and the vet had me change her food to a lower protein California Natural (which did have a recent recall). This solved the problem of crystals in the urine. We did not have ultra sounds done as it was never suggested. Of course, this happened about 6 years ago. Protocol may have changed. |
Thanks for the response. At least now I have the talking points for the conversation with the vet. |
