Anal Gland Sacculitis Anyone go through this w/their fur butt? If yes, what course of treatment was done/ needed? After treatment, did it reoccur? I searched YT & only found my thread & 1 post from years ago w/not much info. I'm understanding that this happens to older small breed dogs... Mimi might have this, she's still very agitated & her behind is bothering her. We saw the vet yesterday & Mimi's anal sacs were emptied internally, 1 side was full & the other was very pasty. There was no infection & no blood from what the vet could see from the emptied contents & vet suggested laser therapy treatment (which has good results)...or anti-inflammatory shot. Earliest I can take her back is on Sat if she doesn't improve. Vet said diet doesn't matter & Mimi is getting enough fiber in her diet, her stools are always compact & firm. Reading online & they say basically the same thing, unfortunately there's no prevention & dietary management is rarely of any benefit. |
My first Yorkie had to have 2 surgeries for an impaction, which recurred about 3-4 times within a year or so. That's when I learned about how to check and express anal glands, lol. After that, it cleared up and she never had any more problems. A breeder told me to squirt a bit of Panalog into the anus, that would help get things functioning normally. I still do ths occasssionally, depending on if the dog is having discomfort in the area, or if the glands seem to be remaining full more times than not. I've also heard that dogs with allergies tend towards having anal gland problems, although not all dogs with gland problems have allergies. So if a food change is made, and one starts to see anal gland issues, IMHO I would find another brand/type of food. Also I would add more fiber, like green beans or pumpkin as needed. I would think that some dogs may require more fiber than others... no set formula for this, just trial and error. Her stools may be fine, but her anals maybe could use an assist in getting past this in the form af a bit of additional fiber added to her diet, till normal function returns. If this becomes a chronic problem, surgery can be done to remove the affected gland/s. Risks are involved as with any surgery, but as a last resort it may be an option. My Tinkerbell had a different issue, her anal glands would just drip constantly. This I believe, was a fear response, as she lived with 6 kids under the age of 12 YO. So too much play and teasing had an effect on her. When she came here to live, I had forgot all about this gland issue for 2 months, then realized I should be checking them. I checked and they were fine. So a better diet and environment is all that made a difference for her. She had been returned to the Humane Society and was considered unadoptable/special needs due to this problem. |
Poor Mimi. I don't have any advice, but I wanted to send my well wishes to your little girl. Praying she is feeling better soon and doesn't have to have additional treatment. |
I'm glad we caught Mimi's impaction in time...only 1 gland was pasty & impacted, no infection. It's so bizarre bc I check her glands once a week b4 her bath & this time, her glands didn't seem full, so I didn't express them. She started licking there, so I knew it was bothering her & I expressed them & only 1 side came out. I felt around & that area was flat, I couldn't feel anything so I thought she was ok. She continued acting agitated & kept looking back & licking the air. Trying to figure out if it's her change in diet that caused this bc this never happened b4 & I don't want it to happen again. But they did say this happens to some older pets, so it can happen as she gets older too. Thanks Kat for your tips & suggestions, will have to google 'panalog' to see what it is loll. Wow, poor Tink! So happy you took her in, what a wonderful story. Thanks Kristin, Mimi is fine now, took 2 days for her to be ok enough that it doesn't bother her. If it ever happens again, I think I'll go ahead & do the laser therapy to ease her discomfort. |
I don't mean to kidnap this thread but at what age should I be doing something about Princess Sophie's anal glands??? |
Poor Mimi...I hope she improves by Saturday. |

I am glad Mimi is better now!! |
I hope Mimi stays well and doesn't have to have that more drastic treatment. I imagine those full sacs do hurt and itch so. |
I am very happy to hear that Mimi is feeling better! Crossing fingers and paws for her and you that this doesn't happen again. |
So glad she's improved... and good thing you caught it early. I would keep a close eye on her till she adjusts to the food and gets over this for now. Sometimes when a gland has a problem, I've had them refill again in a day or two, and have had to express them 2-4 times in a week. But once the problem resolves, the gland can return to normal function and can go for months without having to be expressed. |
My dog is scooting on her rear end Hi, could someone tell me what Panalog is? and how to get it? My dog was scooting on her butt yesterday and had trouble having a bowel movement. First time this happened. I tried to wash her anal area and squeeze it a bit. She finally had a bowel movement this morning...normal... She does have allergies and is a delicate sensitive little 4 1/2 lb dog. What can I do to keep her anal glands healthy and functioning normally? I do not know how to express anal glands and heard it is not a good thing to do. Thanks again everyone. |

Panolog Ointment for Animal Use - Drugs.com I would ask the vet these questions, and if the vet recommends expressing the anal glands, he or she will show you how to do it. |
