Strange behavior after hitting head Bentley and his skin sister were deviling this evening when he turned and ran out of the room. I did not see it but I sure heard it when he hit his head on the door frame. He didn't yelp or anything and kept on going. My daughter said he was looking behind himself and when he turned his head the side of it hit the door frame. What has be concerned is he's acting scared. I don't know if it's because he really hurt himself or just a matter of he really startled himself. He's drank some water and I had Kelsey give him a "cookie" since he seemed really scared of her. He just really seems scared, walking with his tail stump down and wants to hide. I have not encountered an abused dog before but almost acts like he afraid someone's going to do something to him. I've palpated the side of his head and neck and he does not seem like anything is hurting him. Think I'm just looking for some reassurance. Anyone encounter anything like this before with their dogs? Thanks for any advice. |
Always get a vet's exam and x-rays after a head injury, particularly one where the dog's behavior is different. He's acting scared either from pain or he could be developing swelling of his brain and having hallucinations, weird sensations. Get him to an Emergency Vet and keep him very quiet until you get him there. I wouldn't let him eat or even drink a lot until you see the vet. He needs a neuro exam and x-rays at the very least. |
Dogs frequently don't show pain upon examination. Many vets have told me that. Dogs usually only show acute sudden and unexpected pain - after that, they hide pain from an atavistic fear they would be attacked by the pack or shunned from the pack as a weak member in their survival of the fittest natural world. Dogs can have an amputation and still be wagging its tail, acting friendly and otherwise normal. |
I agree whole heartedly. I've been around a tiny that had a head injury and it scared the crap out of me! Better safe than sorry, you know. Go to the vet and let him/her take a look-see. Praying all is well :) |
Poor Bentley! If he is still behaving this way after a few minutes after it happened, I would be concerned. Max ran head on into a wall at full speed when he was a puppy and wanted to be comforted, but he was up and normal within minutes. Dogs often hide, isolate themselves, when they are in pain. Tail down is also an indicator that something might be off. Is he acting afraid of you, or just your daughter? |
He's acting afraid in general a little bit but really afraid of Kelsey. He was trying to get her to chase him when he hit his head. I feel bad he seems afraid of her now. It's not like she actually hit him with something while they were playing. (Lord knows he's had his share of shots to the head with a ball when playing fetch and the ball bounces the wrong way.) Don't have a local 24 hour vet clinic. Right now he's in his normal sleeping spot for the time of the evening, along side my desk chair. He perked right up when I said "walkies" and I took him out for a very short walk. One of the neighbors had just come in when we went outside and he went nuts wanting to go see him. So I'm starting to think maybe he really scared the crap out of himself. I'll see how he's doing in the morning and get him to the vet if he's not acting right. Will keep you posted. |

I would keep him quiet in case he's got a slow bleed. Activity could increase the tear/rupture in any injured brain vein/small artery. You know of people that die from a slow bleed from the tear of a small vein in the brain a day later after the head injury that seem fine at first. Hate to scare you but you have to consider that right now and just face that with any head injury. Not saying he's got that but you want to consider it. Just watch him, watch his pupils to be sure they stay equal in size and react to light and one doesn't get irregular, that he doesn't throw up or act dizzy or lethargic. Wake him frequently and check his pupils, breathing, pulse rate and whether he's walking normally and coordinated. You have got to have a vet see him if he starts to go down and shows there is something wrong, say the bleed is large enough to cause swelling and pressure on the brain. Get him in to the vet as soon as you can tomorrow to be sure he's really okay. |

If his eyes look normal and he was interested in a walk and seeing a friend, I would be less concerned about a head injury. He may have bumped his mouth/teeth, or his nose, both of which can really hurt and feel numb/tingly (speaking from experience :)). Keep a close eye on him tonight. |

:thumbup::thumbup: I agree.....it really does not take too much of a thump on the head to cause a possible swelling of the brain, and possibly even a bleed into their head. I would absolutely get it checked out...he may just have a headache, or he could have blurred vision and it has him scared. |
Quick update. After a restful night's sleep he is back to his usual self. Starting by his usual attempt to inflict brain damage on ME by jumping on my head and licking me half to death lol. He also did his usual pouncing on Kelsey too so I'm guessing all is forgiven. He's in his kennel right now because it's time for me to shower for work and he's even protesting as usual that he wants to be with mommy and not in his kennel. I will continue to monitor him closely and get a report from doggy daycare(the grand humans). Anything out of the ordinary I will take him straight to the vet tonight(they stay open till 7). |
i am so glad that he is okay |
Happy to hear he is doing well. :) |
