please help...so worried :( For those of you who may know what I'm going through I am asking for your opinion to ease my mind and heart. My baby Sophie had mastitis so I took her to the vet to get treated and while we were there I asked about her greasy coat that smells musty and she is itchy a lot. They said she might have demodectic mange and I'm freaking out. I looked it up and she looks nothing like the pictures I saw. She is not losing her hair and its not red and scaly. She does have a patch on her back that looks like cradle cap on a baby, but I'm having a hard time seeing mange. I thought maybe allergies, but the vet said mange and I'm scared. |
I'm so sorry to hear your baby is having many issues. I'm clueless on the subject. I will be sending her positive thoughts and energy for a speedy recovery. |
Sorry I don't know anything about either one. I think they can do a skin scraping to test for mange. I hope some others can come on and help you. |

My only experience with it is very dated. We had a dog which I rescued when I was a kid that developed severe mange. My mother bathed him every day or two in an over the counter Hartz shampoo which for some reason I remember as sulfadine, but don't know for sure. It took a long time, but he was eventually cured. He was a young dog then and lived to be 18. Keep in mind this was the early 70s. So I'm guessing there must be some major advancements now. What did your vet recommend? I would think there is probably both shampoos and meds now. |
I am surprised your pup was not tested for mange. Maybe go to get a second opinion |
Might also help those that have dealt with rescues and different ailments if you could possibly post a picture. ? Praying for your Sophie. |
I definately would get a 2nd opinion. But to ease your mind a little.. I had a female one time that had greasy hair and yet dry skin. My Vet gave me a medicated shampoo and after a few shampoos it was gone. It's been so long ago all I remember is he said the dry skin was causing over reaction from oil glands. The shampoo is Keratolux made by Virbac. Supposed to bathe 2x weekly for 2 weeks then weekly for 2 weeks. But if I remember right, it didn't take that long. |
It would be impossible to know unless she had a skin scraping to tell what bacteria it is, if it's yeast or mange...usu yeast smells & is incredibly itchy. If she had mastitis, is she nursing pups now? How can the vet say it might be mange when it's contagious & have her go home to her pups w/out getting tested?:confused: |
Hi all :) I'm going to try and reply to all posts with this reply. Thank you all for posting and your kind thoughts. Sophie does not have puppies and has never been bred. From what I have heard from several vets and research demodectic mange is not contagious. The vet did not scrape her skin because she wanted to deal with the mastitis first. More than likely she had a false pregnancy and that is why she got mastitis. I could take a picture of her skin but it wouldn't show anything. she is not red, scaly, crusty, losing hair or have patches of the rash. It looks like a small area of cradle cap and she has dandruff a lot. The main reason the vet said mange I think is because of the greasy fur and itchiness. But she also had a flea allergy which is why I was hoping it was allergies. We got rid of the fleas too. I have seen demodectic mange and to me it doesn't look like it, but I thought well maybe she had a milder case. But to me, it looks like dry skin. I am just so scared because she is my baby and I am terrified of something happening to her. |
