Update on Daisys colitis. Need some more advice Bloody diarrhea has cleared up. Took two days. Had one normal stool today. No cerenia for two days and she hasn't vomited. Both vets recommend Xanax to try to control the colitis as well as tylan powder, probiotics, and pepcid long term. Lol now I just need to figure out a schedule for all this! I may need some advice. I know probiotics should be taken on empty stomach and given half hour to hour before meal. But probiotics also need to be taken two hours before or after antibiotic. I think two hours before and then antibiotic would defeat the purpose?? Tylan also needs to be given with food. Pepcid is recommended to be given at night and Xanax in the morning. I hate all these drugs in her but she's suffering and I want my little girl happy again! So how do I figure this schedule out lol! So breakfast tylan and Xanax? I would like to give probiotics two hours later but that's not really an empty stomach. I usually give probiotics at four then dinner at five. But I think tylan needs to be twice a day. So snack at 9 with tylan. Pepcid then at 11? I wonder if pepcid would mess up or help probiotics since it lowers stomach acid. I could do probiotics before bed with pepcid. Soo confused! |
Sorry prozac not Xanax. |
It's confusing when they are on so many medications. Roxie was on metronidazole, probiotics, prilosec and prednisone for reflux and I had to write down a schedule and then record when I gave her what. I know the metronidazole couldn't be given near the probiotics because the vet said the metro would eat up all the good probiotics. I gave the probiotic midday and the metrod in the morning and evening. She is now off the metronidazole so it's a little easier. I hope Daisy's colitis continues to clear up. |
I think you need to find a plan that actually works for you and Daisy. I guess I would want to know the cause of the colitis. I know you said they did all these tests and even exploratory surgery but has anyone dealt with the allergy component? Food intolerances and allergies can cause these symptoms -- I lived with similar frustration for years. You are doing all novel proteins, but what about asking your vet to put her on RC Hypoallergenic diet? Or another hydrolyzed protein diet. Or refer you to a veterinary dermatologist who can deal with the allergies. Regarding the probiotics, I'm not a fan. I use a veterinary nutritionist who is board certified and very reputable to help me with home cooking for my dogs and she has indicated that probiotics are not necessary in 99.9 percent of dogs or cats and that they do not benefit from them. That's pretty much means they are a waste. |
I'm going to try food again if the colitis doesn't clear up this time. She's doing so good on it and her eyes are not watering right now so I was thinking it was the stress. I have a journal on her and she always develops diarrhea and vomiting after company comes over or I leave her more then a couple hours. She was groomed Wednesday and then had five car rides over the weekend and I think that triggered Sundays episode beginning. I read a lot on pepcid last night and feel it would make things worse so I'm going to try avoid giving it. When she had diarrhea for about two months starting in January the probiotics were the only way I could get it to clear. The diarrhea was gone a couple days after starting it. I think she may be prone to sibo. Every time I miss a dose her poop looks bad again. Luckily I stay at home with her so hopefully I can find a good schedule. Unfortunality she was up all night. She kept swallowing real loud. Like she had a bunch of saliva her mouth. Read its a side effect of metro. She did this last time on it. So I'm going to cut the dose in 1/2. Hopefully she's ok with it. She's had 8 doses already so I think she will be. |
She was on a bunch of vet diets when all this started a year and a half ago. She didnt try hydrolized diet yet. Last time I looked I thought it had grains and corn in it. She's allergic to grains corn chicken and beef. I could be wrong about the ingredients in it. I will have to double check. |
I use the Purina HA for my Daisy, but it's lower protein which was why I mentioned RC. I still have to use daily atopica for my girl, and if she became intolerant to chick pea, the only proteins I have left are calamari and kangaroo. The Purina HA is soy based. The hydrolysis proteins aren't recognized by the immune system. My problem with HA is that I still need to add fiber to the diet or she gets backed up. I know what you mean about the loud swallowing, daisy often gags and spits up under the bed after going outside for even 5 mins. I use Benadryl too. Your daisy is adorable, btw! |
