What could it be? I just got home from work and picked up Heidi and noticed down low on her belly toward her privates it was swollen really bad on both sides and her skin was purpley. She acted totally normal. I've noticed it puffy on & off before, but nothing like this. I brushed her hair fixing to load her up & take her to the vet. Thought I'd have another look at it and it was completely back to normal. All within maybe 15 minutes. She doesn't act like she is in pain when I touched it and happily sprawled out to get her belly rubbed. What could it be? It scared me. |
Sorry, I have no idea, but hope all is okay. |
Others on this site may be able to offer you advice better than I. I have no idea what it could be but I would think that checking with your vet, very soon would be a good idea. I always try to error on the side of caution in case it's something I would never think about. Good luck. I hope you find out something very soon and please let us know what you find. |
Is she spayed? |

If she is spayed (that was going to be my question, too) and she is having these flare ups (even though they subside)...I would still take her into the vet and have them check her. She may have a UTI or some infection down there. ? |
yes i agree just to be safe but try and get either a video or some pictures to show them also! hoping all is well and it is nothing serious. |
Oh that's a good idea to take the picture or video. I wish I had thought of that last night when it looked so bad. I was too busy freaking out trying to hurry and get her to the vet before it closed. This might sound dumb, but is that something that can be stress related? She is anxious when I'm away. She was totally fine when I left for work this morning and I came home at lunch (4 hrs later) and she was a little puffy again and a little purplish skin. After home a few minutes I looked again and puffiness had gone away, but skin was still purple. Right before I left to come back to work I looked again and totally back to normal. I'm going to try and get her into the vet tonight or at least hopefully tomorrow. She did eat all the food in her bowl and drank some water. If the vet wants a urine sample, how would I go about doing that so I can take it with me? |

As for getting a urine sample, I can tell you how others have said to do it - however, I have yet to have success with Mandie (my own fault - she is not used to walking on a leash and to "catch" her, I have to leash her so then she won't "go" lol). You can get a soup ladle (can tie/tape a long stick to the handle to make it longer if needed) and walk Heidi on leash and "catch" the pee in the ladel. You could also try to turn her pee pads upside down so when she pees, it just pools instead of getting absorbed. |
you could be spot on and it could be anxiety and as terri said not a dumb thought at all. they all react to stress differently and if she gets worked out it could be where her stress releases itself. best of luck to finding out a dx and solution. |
Just got home from the vet. They said it is a bi-lateral hernia. They scheduled her for surgery Thursday morning. I cried all the way home, and she watched so concerned about me. |

I am sure the vet will take great care of Heidi and I will pray for her to come thru the surgery smoothly and to heal right up. We can be nervous and waiting mommies together on Thursday, ok? My girl is having dental surgery that morning. We'll support each other until they are thru surgery and in our arms :) |
Oh yes, I'd appreciate that so much! Praying your girl's dental goes great. I'm sure it will. Its so true, you just feel so much better knowing they are over it & getting better right in our arms, so true. On a bright note, the vet said she has the best teeth of any 4 yr old yorkie she has ever seen. |
