My 4 all have colitis... It started out about 4 weeks ago looking like simple diarrhea, so they all had two five day courses and a ten day course of Metronidazole, which worked fine while they were taking it. As soon as I stopped it, the diarrhea came back. So off to the vet's we went, diagnosis is colitis, or diarrhea of the large bowel. Changed the antibiotic to a Sulfa drug, probiotics, and a med to firm up the loose stools. Can't figure out what started it, either bad food, picked up something in the yard (wet conditions), or maybe a contaminated enzymatic toothpaste, IDK. I sure hope the new meds do the trick. Between butt baths and bleaching the floors I'm not getting much else done around here, lol. |
Oh no! 4 weeks?! Seems like something is going around because I'm hearing about lots of diarrhea. Teddy had it for 2 days and cleared up with an antibiotic. Thankfully Max didn't share it. We were doing butt washes every 2 hours around the clock. I wasn't too worried because Teddy stayed hydrated. Of course, it had to start the day we had the snow storm with 70 mph winds knocking down trees, so we could only talk to our vet on the phone the first day. I hope your pups get over this soon. |

Is it possible that they all have some sort of parasite? This happened with Sophia and her diarrhea would not go away for months. We tried multiple rounds of antibiotics (which always helped the diarrhea when she was on them), blood testing, 3 stool tests for worms, tried changing her food in case it was an allergy. We were about to schedule her for a biopsy of the intestines, when the other vet suggested trying panacur, it's cheap and we don't really have anything to lose. Sure enough, that fixed everything. So the vets best guess is that she had whipworms. This was over a year ago and no more long bouts of diarrhea since :thumbup:. |
Cathy, if you have wet conditions in your backyard, I would suspect that giardia could be the issue. While you can treat it with metronidazole, panacur is better. Also, it is hard to pick up on fecals. The best way is for a very fresh specimen to be examined under the microscope. Your vet could do that without sending it out. |

Colitis has a very distinct poop. It's almost always associated w/mucous & bright red blood @ the end of the poopie...sign of inflammation of the lower intestine or colon. Antibiotics are prescribed if it's bacterial & can be managed on a low fat, high fiber diet. Recurring diarrhea makes me think it's giardia...the poopie is stinky, greasy looking, pale in color & always runny, no blood or mucous. Ewww all this talk of poopie is gross lolll!:p Hope they all feel better real soon! |

My daughters' two yorkies have had intermittent diarrhea over the last several months. They are never around other dogs and she has a fenced off back patio where they do their business so they don't even get out on the wet ground. I must let her know about the panacur as she has had them both on the Metronidazole several times along with antibiotics. It seems to clear up but always tends to come back. The vet doesn't seem to know what is going on and I think they just assume it is a bowel inflamation. |
