Please Help Swollen Tail Hi, So I took Milo to the Vet 2 weeks ago because he was rubbing his butt on the ground. The Vet said his anal glands were full and they expressed them. (this was the first time) He was still acting odd so I called them again and they told me to wait a few days it should work itself out. He was still licking and now it was red so I called again and brought him back in and they gave him Anitbiotics, and checked his glands again and said they were fine. He has been on the anitbiotics for about a week and when I came home yesterday I noticed his tail at the base (Milos tail is not docked) was a little swollen, and then this morning it was more swollen. He is not acting right he is following me more then normal and he was shaking a bit this morning and seems to be running away from his Butt. I am going to call the Vet first thing this morning but does anyone know what this could be? I would really appreciate help. Cheryl |
Poor Milo. His behavior indicates he is in pain, and the swelling means something is going on with his tail. He may have injured it. I would go back to the vet for the doctor to examine and xray his tail. |

Vet can see us at 10 am will post update later thank you everyone |
I am glad you are able to get him to the vet today! Hopefully it is something easily treated. |
Thank you everyone:) The Vet gave us Rimadyl to take for a few days, he has taken this before so I know it is ok for him She seems to think the swollen tail has something to do with the prior anal gland issue and that once the swelling goes down he should be ok. The redness that he has, has gone away with the Antibiotics so that's good, and he seems to be healing good back there from the prior licking. Since I know that the Rimadyl will cause him to drink and pee a lot he will be coming to work with me tomorrow and my great neighbor will pee him every two hours on Friday. Thanks again for all the well wishes I really appreciate it. |
Glad you were able to take him to the vet and get it checked out promptly. I read that dogs that poop outside, naturally empty their anal glands better than dogs that poop inside. You might want to encourage more outside pooping for taking him for a walk after dinner. Another option is adding a little fiber to the diet; we use a tablespoon of ground flax seed and a few green beans. Hope he feels better fast! |

Thanks for the advice |
so glad and hope hes doing much better once the meds kick in!! |
Aw, poor kiddo - that sounds so uncomfortable! You'll get him back to good though :). What are you feeding, btw? Oftentimes, anal gland issues occur bc there is an ingredient that is irritating the GI system. You might want to really think about switching foods - that may make huge-gantic difference. |

Glad to hear Milo has a pain med. Sending him best wishes to recover quickly. Great advice above about thinking about diet. Sometimes diet needs change with age too. |
