Allergies to ant stings/bites My Yorkie, Bella is allergic to ant bites. Twice this year she was bitten by one or two ants and gone into anaphalactic shock. The first time it happened, she literally stopped breathing.........my husband gave her mouth-to-mouth while I was on the phone to the emergency vet. After waiting 20 minutes! the vet arrived and confirmed that she was definitely in anaphalactic shock and she might not make it through the night. She was given steroids to combat the allergic reaction but she did make it! Has anyone else experienced this? |
Oh wow!!! How scary!! I have never exp ant bites, however Peanut was stung by a wasps two times.. he was rushed to the Vet and they gave him shots, and fluids! Where is Bella getting bit? I would try to keep her away from that area for sure- can you put poison down and kill them all? I know if a really good Eco/Pet friendly bug poison we use for our grass. |
I would ask the vet for a prescription for an Epi Pen to keep on hand with her. |
OMG! That is so scary....how did you know she was bite by ants? |

Oh how horrible! We even get ants coming into our house sometimes. I wouldn't know how to keep them away from my pup. Bless your heart - must be so scary! |
My girl is highly allergic to something outside. We are guessing a bug but not sure which type. Anytime she is at significant risk for being around bugs she is supervised. We also wait to leave the house after potty trips. I have injectable Benadryl for her. It goes almost everywhere with her. |
One of the ladies I sold a little girl to, was left out in the fenced in back yard, "for just a second while I went and got my coffee"....and by the time she got back to the back door, she did not see the little dog. She called her and got no response....so she hit the back yard at a run, rounded the side of the house and saw the baby lying motionless, on top of a red ant nest.....TOTALLY COVERED IN ANTS!!!!! She grabbed her up, giving the unconscious baby breaths and pumping on her chest, ran thru the house, grabbed keys and arrived at the emergency clinic within 8 minutes....they continued to resusitate the baby, full blown anaphylaxis, and miracle of miracles, they saved her life....but it triggered what is called "the cascade" and she is now getting allergy shots and has a horrible time with allergies.... The vet told my friend he was not sure any of her labs and organ functions would return to normal....all because of the massive amount of ant toxin the baby had gotten. The vet had said she obviously was not allergic to ants when this happened, or it would have absolutely killed her............she had hundreds of ant stings........poor little baby has NEVER been left unsupervised again, for even one minute. The funny thing about all of this is my friend was in the waiting room at the emergency hospital, and happened to notice she was in her pajama top, underpants, and barefoot! The staff was nice enough to give her a pair of scrubs to get her home in..... |
that is horribly scary |
OMG, that's so scary. I would contact a compounding pharmacy and see if they can do an epi pen for you. A lot of my dog meds come from a compounding pharm bc vets often don't carry the potency needed for our little kiddos. Call Diamondback Pharmacy - this is where I get my meds, and some other folks at YT do too, bc they ship nationally. If they *can* make an epi pen, then your vet could call it in for you and they could ship it to you. Here is their website: Diamondback Drugs - Veterinary Medicine and Compounding Leaders |
