ear mites, ear infection or just wax build up???? 3 Attachment(s) my dog has been on revolution for about 4 months now so i thought he'd be safe from ear mites but now his been shaking his head repeatedly, itching it and walking with his head tilted to the side sometimes. There is a odor coming from his ears when he itches it near me and brown gunk with blood i guess from him itching it so bad. I took a few pictures in hope somebody could rule out ear mites or and ear infection i really hope its not because im all the way in the woods camping right now and the only store near by is at least 2hrs away and i highly doubt they sell things for dogs. if it is an ear infection or ear mites, i will have no choice but to pack up the family and leave ... everyone is going to be bummed because we've been planning this for months. please someone shed some light |
Ear I feel for the poor dog and YOU, being far from doggie vet help. Others probably have more exact knowledge to help you, but my two cents worth is that odor usually means fungus issues. The dark brown gunk does not look like wax and wax does not usually smell? It could get infected if he scratches a lot though. (I do wonder what the small dark red spots are? Blood or bugs?) If so, perhaps someone here can suggest a 'home remedy' until you get home. Hope you can solve this without having to pack up and go home early. |
I rule out mites, but his ear is definitely swollen. It could be a yeast infection or an ear infection. He needs to be seen by a vet. Delaying it can cause his ear drum to reputure if it hasn't already since you mentioned blood. :( |
Im not a vet...but I just had Rosie into a vet cuz her ears looked very similar to those pics. One ear had a yeast infection the other ear had a bacterial infection. Im using the meds the vet prescribed but ill look back in my posts as someone suggested a vinegar mix... |
This is what hrossen11 posted on my thread..... I use water (4)/ vinegar(1) mix wipe with cotton ball. Same thing I used on my daughter who had chronic ear infection. Kills both yeast and bacteria. 02-26-2013, 07:42 PM # |
Have you looked for an emergency vet close to where you are camping? Your dog needs to be seen....I am so sure this ear is hurting him. I personally would not put anything in my dog's ear if it looked like that, but that's just me. Even if you have to drive 2 hours each way to have the pup seen by a vet, it beats just packing up and going home! |

i called around everywhere and ask other campers, everyone said there is no vet till we get to the town which is basically half way home. i can tell his in pain because sometimes he whines when his itching really hard especially at nights i noticed it really bugs him. the carpet ear rubbing thing, i also thought was normal until now. RubynRose mentioned the vinegar and water mix which two people here suggested trying for a few days instead of leaving so early, they both had a look at his ears and suggested it. One mentioned her Husky had the same thing and it cleared up until she was available to a vet but NONE of us are vets so i dont know. I really dont want to leave but i also dont want to be responsible for my baby going deaf, Im going to give my vet a call in the morning hopefully he's available on Sundays .... wish they had a ambulance for pets ): |

To me, it looks like a bad yeast infection. Yeasty ears are very itchy for them, so if he's been scratching his ears, he could've caused it to bleed from constantly scratching. If you can take a few moments to see this very good informative video: Eating These Foods Can Cause Dog Yeast Infection I think he needs to be seen by a vet, no home remedy can fix this & I don't think you should try anything @ home, it might make things worse...don't worry about him going deaf, just take him in on Monday. We have used a vinegar solution to kill yeast around patient's trachs in the hospital....because of that, I have used it for an "emergency measure" until I can get into the vet...the itching from a yeast infection....well if you have ever had a vaginal yeast infection, you KNOW!!!!....it worked well for my dog's ears. |
