Hemorrhagic Gastroenteritis My Zach had to be taken to the Animal Hospital yesterday Thank goodness we caught it in time He had been having diarrhea for about two days But yesterday I came home to a critically sick dog with bloody diarrhea and vomit everywhere that had to be rushed to the vet's scary to think that something so serious can happen with a few hours Thankfully with IV fluids and antibiotics he is coming back But if your dog has diarrhea be careful |
Praying for Zach... yes, you were both very lucky. |
Prayers going out for Zach that he will recover quickly. I went through the same thing with my Allie last year. It just comes on all of a sudden. |
Indeed you are very fortunate. Two days of diarrhea is a lot for a small dog. I am glad you got him to the vet and he is ok now. |
You are very lucky your small dog was still alive by the time you got home. I will be praying that your little one is getting better and better. In the future, remember, according to the AVMA, two bouts of diarrhea in 24 hours should result in seeking veterinary attention. Small dogs get dehydated so fast and there is always the chance they have early HGE, as yours had. Here's hoping that baby is well in a matter of days! Please let us know how that baby is doing when you can this evening. |
There are a couple of us on here that come completely unspooled when we read about a poster having a baby that has had diarrhea for "a couple of days", "almost a week", "on and off for about 2 weeks"....and then some add vomiting to the mix....""diarrhea and vomiting for 2 days", "vomiting and diarrhea for a whole week", "vomiting and diarrhea for a week or so".....Diarrhea in a small dog for over 24 hours is great cause for concern and is a trip to the vet without fail.......add vomiting to that, and you are collecting "coffin nails"....these babies dehydrate soooooooo fast, and when it is coming from BOTH ends, it is happing at warp speed....and they are not only loosing fluids, they are beginning to expoerience unbalanced electrolytes....'lytes control your entire body, and your heart can stop if things get messed up there!. You just can not sit on diarrhea for a couple of days....you cant sit on diarrhea AND vomiting for more than 12 hours....you may very well lose your baby! HGE can strike within hours and it is a very real emergent situation! I am so happy your baby is going to be OK....it could have EASILY been you come home to a deceased baby.... PLEASE people!!!! Seek vet treatment for diarrhea that is over a day long...you leave for work and Fluffy has had a diarrhea stool, and she is still having diarrhea when you get home, take her in.... If you come home from work and she is having diarrhea, plan on calling in the next day and taking her to the vet in the am...this is just regular diarrhea....if there is ANY hint of blood, go ASAP!! If she is also vomiting, go ASAP!! You can get meds to stop both occurances and the pup can get sub Q fluids for the dehydration.... |
Praying for a speedy recovery for Zach. |
Hope Zach is feeling much better soon, |

I hope Zach is doing better. Cali had HGE and a few months later had another bout. So watch for any future bouts and seek treatment immediately. |
Just to let everyone know Zach is back at home and seems Much Much better He got some fluids and antibiotics and he's home on a ID diet for now but he seems like his old self I think he got this from a squeaky toy that he just loved to death He's got a little ADD Attention Dog Deficit when it comes to his toys he only plays with one at a time Incessantly..... I don't think you can wash away those germs  |

As for toy's and getting them clean. The soft fuzzy ones you wash in the washing machine, don't use any bleach or fabric softner and then when done let Air Dry or if your dryer has an air dry cycle use that. As for the rubber toy's or those type of toy's they can be washed in the dish washer, use the top rack and take out when the drying cycle begins and let air dry. |
