Yorkie seizure My 4 year old Yorkie Bolt just had a bad seizure. I probably lasted 45 - 60 seconds. It's been about 10 minutes since it happened and he is still not "quite right." He is laying with me resting, but I can tell he's still recovering. Any help would be appreciated. |
As quoted fron the YT libarary: When to take your dog to the Vet: 4. Dog Seizures Seizures are also considered a neurological condition but are so common in dogs it deserves its own category. Any dog that has never experienced a seizure before needs to be seen immediately. Signs associated with a seizure include uncontrollable shaking and tremors, loss of consciousness, paddling with the legs and possible loss of bowel or urinary control. The most common cause of seizures in dogs is epilepsy. If your dog is diagnosed as epileptic not every seizure will constitute an emergency. If your dog has multiple seizures within a 24-hour period or if a seizure lasts longer than a couple minutes then your epileptic dog may need immediate veterinary attention. Talk to your veterinarian more about how to manage epilepsy and what to watch for. Other causes of seizures include hypoglycemia in puppies, insulinoma in older dogs and toxicities in dogs of all ages. |
I had a yorkie pup a couple years back that started having seizures and there was nothing anyone could do to help. It was by far one of the scariest and saddest experience I have ever had as a dog owner. Hopefully that will not be your situation. My only suggestion is to get him tested ASAP ~ especially if he has another episode. Best wishes for a speedy and happy recovery. :) |
I would get Bolt to the er vet as soon as possible. He needs to be evaluated. Please keep us posted. |
How is bolt doing today? Did you get him in to see the vet? Praying for him. |
Update on Bolt Less than an hour after his episode last night, Bolt was his normal self-getting up to bark and greet someone ringing the doorbell. I tried to keep him laying down and calm for the rest of the night. Several hours afterwards he was drinking A LOT of water. Which I read is common after a seizure. Today he also seems his old self-running up to me growling with his ball in mouth so he can play fetch . I have been keeping a watchful eye on him (and documenting everything in a journal), which is easy because he and his sister, Bella :aimeeyork, are always my constant companions around the house. I called my vet this morning, and he wasn't too concerned about it since he had just one, but I do have an appointment on Thursday to have both Bolt and Bella checked. I know that seems like a long time for my baby boy to wait! IF something happens between now and Thursday, I will most CERTAINLY bring him to the ER vet. Thank for all your help and concern with Bolt.:animal36 |
Bolt is GREAT today. I made a post earlier, but it looks like it has to go to a moderator first. |
You really need to find out what caused that seizure, no matter how your dog is acting now. So many things can cause seizures that can be treated. It could be something really bad going on and you can catch it early since he's apparently never had one before. Please get him to the vet and don't rely on online diagnoses or recommended treatments from Google or something. Get him to a vet and keep him checked out. |
Bolty has an appointment this week to get checked out by our vet. I won't take any chances with my baby boy. |

I remember when Clyde first started having seizures. It is a really scary thing. I Hope your vet can give you some answers as to what caused the seizure, and hopefully it doesn't happen again. You're a good mommy getting him to the vet earlier rather than later. |
