Not for sure what to do about Bo Took Bo to vet because I noticed he was breathing heavy and wheezing. They took an xray and noticed his intestines inflammed and fluid on his chest cavity. They drawled fluid out and ran test. No cancer cells and heart sounds fine so they ruled out cancer and heart disease. Did a blood count and protein levels are only half of what they should be. He has had some diaheria and vomited twice.Vet is baffled and is treating as if he ate something he shouldn't of. He goes back Mon. to see if protein levels are up and if not she suggest a specialist. He is on Reglan, Baytril, Metronidazole and Prednisone. His breathing is much better and not bloated. He looks like he has lost weight even though he is eating good. He has just been laying around. He has always been a very active playful dog. He will be 4 in Dec. and has always been healthy. He had a blood panel done in Oct. to get his teeth cleaned and everything was great. I was wondering if any one has heard of Lymphangiectiais/ ple. I talked to a friend and it sounds like what Bo may have. Any input would be appreciated. |
I have a pup with lymphangectasia. What I strongly suggest you do is to go to a board certified internal med vet. That is what I did when Cookie's protein levels were found to be terribly low in Dec. 2011. I also did a consult with a board certified vet nutritionist and I cook for Cookie every day. I am happy to say that she is still thriving! Here is a link about her...perhaps it will help. http://www.yorkietalk.com/forums/sic...ia-update.html While meds are important and they give more at the beginning, the specialist told me that recent studies indicate that diet plays a key role in the success of treatment for these pups. Good luck and please keep us posted. |
Thank you Lady Jane. |
So for now do I just wait til Mon. and see if protein levels go back up? For now his breathing is much better and he does eat, I just worried cause all he wants to do is sleep. I guess its from the meds he is on. |
I don't think those meds should make him that sleepy. He probably is not feeling well at all. I personally would not wait....mine went to the specialist immediately. Sometimes they need plasma to get them out of trouble....and that is especially true when their bodies are accumulating fluids. |
Thanks again Ladyjane. |
No, Cookie did not go immediately.....she waited BUT I was advised to let them know immediately if she had breathing issues and/or edema in her belly. Are you close to the University of TN? Perhaps you could go there?? |
A little update since yesterday. Thursday, did not poop at all and this morning a normal bowel movement! |

I am just thinking aloud and sharing my thoughts so bare with me. Bo is doing better he is eating, drinking and pooping normal bowels, and breathing well, but his energy level is still not back. Mon. will go back to vet to check protein levels and see if they are back to normal. My thoughts are if the are normal does that mean whatever he has or had to cleared up or meds just masking it. Right now I am concerned cause he just wants to sleep. His activity level is a 9 and right now he is a 3,whether than that he is fine. I know if you don't good rest is the best medicine. I am just so confused. |
If he has lymphangectasia, it is not curable but is treatable. The only real way to know is to do a scope and biopsies. That is how Cookie was diagnosed. I do think they probably are fairly certain that Bo has it based on the xray results and the fact there was fluid build up and of course protein loss. Yes, the meds and diet will help it to improve. The fact that he is tired indicates to me that he may still be having some issues; but you won't know that until you get the lab results. It is very encouraging that he is eating well.....the ones that don't respond well are the ones that don't want to eat. My Cookie is on prednisone every other day now and will never come off of that. Every other day is a good way to give it to avoid the cushings type symptoms that come with steroid use. I won't tempt fate on that one....and she is doing fantastic now, thank God. Just hang on until Monday...see what the lab results are and speak with your vet about this. Take a list of things that you want to ask/discuss. Sometimes it is easy to forget when you are in there. If your vet suggests a specialist, that is something I strongly encourage. Prayers for you and Bo. |
I had a friend suggest he may have lymphangectasia not the vet. When we took Bo to the vet this past Wed. she was baffled and she said based on his symptoms she is gonna treat him as if he ate something he should not of. I don't know if she has heard of lymphangectasia or not. I have printed of several good articles about it and taking it to her Mon. I would of called her sooner, but she is at a conference. Thanks Lady Jane for responding. |
Sorry...I misread that. I think you should consider a specialist so that you can find out what he does have. Good luck! |
Its Sunday morning and Bo is still doing ok. His energy level is still the same, but he is eating and drinking. Anxiously, awaiting for Mon. to have him retested on his protein levels. Praying it is not anything serious. |
