Help! Loose stools now diarrhea, but still active and has an appetite Yesterday morning, Mocha developed loose stools (not too firm, but still held it's shape) and I thought she had just ate something she shouldn't have. I didn't feed her all day even though she wanted to eat and she did drink plenty of water all day. Throughout the day, she went about 4-5 times vs her normal 2-3 times a day, all were loose stools. Late last night, when I took her out, it was basically liquid, no formation. I did give her a little bit of boiled chicken and rice this morning because it has been 24 hours. She gobbled it right up. Waiting for the vet's office to open so I can try to squeeze her in today or at least have them do a fecal examination for parasites, etc. The weird thing is that she's not vomitting, no blood in her stools (it was a yellow brown last night and this morning it's a normal brown, just liquify), she has an appetite, and is completely playful and normal, despite the diarrhea. Has anyone else had this situation before? |
I have had pups with various GI symptoms, some with vomiting and no diarrhea and vice versa. When they are like what you are describing, I do what you are doing....I go the vet! Good luck...hope Mocha is feeling better soon! Let us know what the vet says. |
Yes... just getting through it with my four. I wait about 2-3 days on soft stool, 1 day but no more on the liquid stuff before going to the vet. If I see it's getting progressively worse, I just take them all in for fecals and meds. Diarrhea can dehydrate them, and dehydration can be deadly, especially with small dogs. |
Thanks! She's had a history of small GI problems, including colitis (or so the vet says). I'm just worried I'm missing something because there isn't any blood and she's not vomiting and she's not lethargic. In the back of my head I keep thinking that I might be overreacting and really she just needs to clean out her tummy, but I want to make sure. I will keep you posted. |

Good yur getting her to the vet especially with her past of stomach troubles |
I went through this with all 3 of mine last summer. We were camping. They did NOT eat or drink anything other than what I gave them. I had them in an x-pen the entire time(except to go for walks) and had astro turf on the ground so they weren't touching the grass,. We stay in the middle of the road so they don't get into "stuff" that other dogs may do on the side of the road , I had them at the vet at least once a week,,,tried everything! boiled hamburg and rice, chicken and rice.....no treats...you name it....I tried it! Had a fecal done,...showed giardia and bacteria in their guts.,...the vet said they must have picked up something at the campground. We tried antibiotics, changing their food etc....FINALLY....after putting them on panacur, fortiflora, and another antibiotic and Iams low ask food from the vet, they were back to normal...Unfortunately...it took a month! It was horrible!! I never cleaned floors and washed butts so much! Maybe bring in a fecal...that can tell them alot. Good Luck! |

Update I didn't take her in, just her fecal sample. Came back negative. I'm going to keep her on the bland diet for a couple more days and if she doesn't get better then take her in. She does have a history of gas imbalance and so I'm almost positive she ate something that didn't agree with her stomach and thus, the diarrhea. Again, she's playful and active, no symptoms (no blood, no pain or shaking, no vomit, eating and drinking regularly) whatsoever except the diarrhea, which is why I thought it was strange. She has never been dehydrated, gums are always pink. I just give a couple of EXTRA dropperfuls of water or so if I've noticed she hasn't been to her water bowl in awhile. Thanks again for the well wishes and advice! |

My Ralphie came to me with a history of GI problems as well. His previous owner had so many problems and he not only got the soft stools anddiarrhea, but it was obvious he had a tummy ache, and did lots of pacing. Her vet gave her Metronidalzole 20 MG chewable. It's for irritable bowel disease, and it’s been a real lifesaver. It works within a half hour and he’s back to normal. Food, such as a green bean can cause it, or sometimes stress. When I first got him he was having weekly problems, now he hasn’t had a problem in months, but I still want a fresh prescription of Metronidalzole on hand, just in case. You might want to ask your vet about it, it has to be compounded. |
