Well bless you for taking her in and trying to help her. I know the cost of vets these days. Our shih tzu was abandoned and we adopted him. He is two years old and now suffers from juvenile cataracts. The surgery is going to cost about $3500.00 but before that we have to cure his liver problem. His enzyme problem is almost cured right now but it's costing us over $500.00. So I know how you feel. I have the Care Credit card also but I think this is going to go over and above the limit on the card. Some people on this forum get a bit carried away because everybody loves their babies but for the most part this is a great forum.
Anyway our prayers go out to you and Oreo.

Since right before Christmas we were dealing with King's illness issues. In the start of January I underwent abdominal surgery. Then at the start of February, Oreo seemed out of sorts so I took her to the vet. After $230, x-rays and office visit with medicine, we found out we cant have her vaccinated while she is sick. Then my dad went into the hospital with total kidney failure among other things. When I said earlier that I was unable to pay the $200 dollars to get her in, it isn't because I am unwilling and I don't want to spend any time watching her suffer, I am trying to take care of her to the best of my ability. I spoke to a friends sister that is a vet and she said that i could give her a small amount of children's Benadryl to relieve her symptoms. That has worked and she isn't choking, spitting phlegm, or struggling. She is back to normal. I am taking her to the vet tomorrow to check up on her, we just want to make sure it is nothing more. I wanted to clarify that I am not trying to minimize the situation or be complacent about this issue. I appreciate all of your help and encouragement and feel thankful that there is such a thing as 'Yorkie Talk' right now!

She may only have something mild, but on the other hand, she may have something much more serious. As others have said, home remedies are never a good option without consulting with a vet. It is important to know dosages among other reasons not to medicate without professional advice. Guessing about a dropper here and there is not safe with little dogs. It is far to easy to overdose one.

Hopefully the OP went to the vet today as she said she was and everything is ok with her pup! :)

Benedryl is fine, if you're sure you're treating allergies, and your vet says to give it.

Human antibiotics are never good for dogs or especially puppies. If you have antibiotics left over from your children, you're not treating them right as all antibiotics should be given as directed till finished, or risk creating a super strain of bacteria that is resistant to antibiotics. Then you'll have a sicker child and a sick pup on your hands.

Not everyone is blessed enough to be able to have the resources available to get to the vet immediately but you can be sure that I love and take care of my dogs to the best of my ability. Like I stated, I do not ask questions in substitution for medical care, I asked questions for advice and to learn things from the experience of other pet owners. Hi there, on your message about your little baby, I have had some experience on skittish babies. The best advice I can give is to be patient. You are showing her a whole new way of life! My Oreo and Mia came from a breeding nightmare, they just weren't old enough to breed yet. They hadn't been handled and were very afraid of people. We just made very deliberate and slow movements around them, gave them lots of love and were sure not to corner them or make them feel like they were out of control in a situation. Neither of them know what to do with toys yet, they still look at king like he is crazy but they will come around. I think the best thing to do is to move slow. Her entire life has been used as a tool, you are showing her another way of life. Although you have a lot to overcome, a loving heart can go a long ways to overcome a cold hand! Good luck and I commend you on making the choice to take on a baby that may not always be someones first choice!
