King is shaking... not eating... any answers Greetings everyone. I have a question about our beautiful little boy, King. He is on a hungerstrike to prove to us that he must have people food. We have been holding strong but he haasn't eaten at all. It has been 1 1/2 days with just little nibbles. Tonight he is sitting with my mom on her lap and just began shaking, more trembling. I saw on different sites that some Yorkies tend to shake. Has anyone on here had experiences with this and what can I do for him if anything. Thanks again.... you all have made this a wonderful process for getting help. |
I don't know much about yorkies shaking but I do know they can get low blood sugar and go into shock. Hyperglycemia I am sure the "no people food" is a good idea, but he has to eat. I home cook and feed a good kibble (I feed fromm). I know my guys love the homecooked food... I use BALANCE IT supplements and if you go to their website they have recipes for homecooking. I would say you could use the homecooked food to supplement the kibble .. or mix in with the kibble would get him to eat. I know 107barney (cathy) has a lot of knowledge about homecooking if you were interested. But first, deal with his shaking... I would say he needs food..even if you mix a little chicken in with his kibble. Do you have any nutrical (a supplement that is often used with puppies to prevent hyperglycemia shock) Good luck |
Mina on occasion isnt crazy about her kibble. It gets mixed with rice, boiled chic, parm cheese, scrambled egg, grated carrots,,,just one not all of these things at once. If your baby is shaking he could be experiencing a hypoglycemic moment, this is DANGEROUS. My thoughts and just my opinion,I personally would not want to eat the same thing day in and out. Mina eats BB grain free and the ingredients list is full of stuff that I eat, including blueberries and cranberries. When I put parm cheese under her kibble she will snarf it up,I guess it makes it smell better because its literally 1/4tsp. |
How old is King? When their blood sugar is low, they can shake. You can check his gums, it should be moist & pink...but he needs to eat something or he's going to throw up yellow bile. I always 'top' their kibble w/something. Scrambled eggs whites, boiled chicken breast, diced thawed frozen green beans, baked sweet potatoes, canned food, anything that is good for them. |
I am overweight, and I have a very soft spot in my heart for anything or anyone, going hungry. Be right or wrong, I can not subscribe to the practice of, "they will eventually eat when they get hungry enough". I have been hungry, and I just can not put my babies thru that. I would be boiling chicken and shredding it and putting a little along with some of the broth it cooked in, over his kibble. I think Fromm has a canned dog food that is shredded chicken, for lo fat diets....you could even get some of that and mix it in with his kibble... |
I hope King as ended his hunger strike. It is too easy for these little ones to go hypoglycemic when not eating especially if he is a puppy and or a tiny one. As the others said try topping his food with some chicken or other foods mentioned. Let us know how he is doing. |
just put some chciken broth over her kibble. Works wonders for mine. She was the same and I smelled her kibble and realized..it smells like nothing.! Who would eat that? So I boiled a couple breasts and skim off fat and put one tablesppon over her food. Since she hasnt eaten you could do canned low sodium but I wouldnt do that all the time.. fyi My dog is a shaker..its not from being hungry either..shes a little piggy :) |
I would be afraid of hypoglycemia. That is too long to go without eating for a yorkie. As one of the posters above said, there are acceptable people foods - scrambled eggs, boiled chicken, rice. Please give him something either alone or with his food to get him through this. You can still try to wean him off people food, but he MUST eat during this process. |
The first thing that comes to my mind is pancreatitis. Not eating and shaking is a classic symptom and he needs to be seen ASAP!!! This is nothing to fool with. These little ones can go down quickly. Shaking is a symptom of pain. If you have not been to a vet yet, please do today! I am sorry I did not see this yesterday. If your vet is not open, then get him to an EC. |
i would take him to a vet |

Yes, if there is no improvement this morning, he needs to be seen SOONER RATHER THAN LATER!!! I cannot emphasize this enough. One of my pups is hospitalized right now and I was fearful I would lose him. His symptoms were only ONE day! These symptoms can be serious!!! |
Looking for an update on King. Do hope he is doing better now.... |
Please give us an update on King.......... |
King Update Thank you all for your ideas and kind words. King is such a wonderful little boy. I apologize for taking so long for a reply, my father went through kidney failure and other issues so I was dealing with him in the ICU, but now he is doing good and so is my little boy. I am still having a hard time getting him to eat at all. King is very close to my mother, he is her dog. He is emotionally linked to her and we are noticing that every time she gets close to having to leave out of town for business, he goes through this type of a hunger strike. I think it is his way of letting her know that she doesn't want her to go. We are showering him with love and trying to accomodate him when we can. The vet ruled out pancreatitis do we are now looking for a food that he is willing to actually eat. We have done the chicken thing with him, its really finding a healthy dog food and one that he will eat, that will be the real struggle I think. I heard that 'Wellness'has a good food for small dogs, he doesn't like the specific 'Yorkshire Terrier' food so I'm looking for any ideas. Thanks again and I am sorry for the time delay in the update. Thanks, Cindy;) |
Thanks for the update! I was worried about King...glad he is better. Also sorry about your father...that's great that he is better! |
